Last week, China Eastern Flight MU5735 Boeing 737 took off from Kunming, China, and an hour later, it plummeted to the ground. Today, we'll be talking about everything that's been uncovered surrounding the crash in China so far. This was a routine flight offered daily between Kunming and Guangzhou, however the plane disappeared over the airspace of Wuzhou, an hour from its planned destination. We'll also dive into the plane itself, a Boeing 737-800 New Generation, or NG, and talk about its history even compared with the 737 MAX. Lastly, we'll discuss the pilots and crew on this flight and the evolution of China Eastern and the aviation safety of Chinese airlines as a whole. I'll also provide an update to what has been discovered in the investigation run by China with help offered from the NTSB and Boeing.

For what's it's worth to those wondering about the lack of a Mayday call, there is a rule of priority that we use in doing our job. "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate." First, fly the plane, get it under control, try and put it in a safe state of flight. Second, once you have the airplane under control and doing what you want, point it in the direction you want. That may be on course, or in a more dire event, moving in a safe direction away from obstacles, other traffic, etc. Third, and absolutely LAST is telling everyone else what is going on or asking for external help. When your airplane goes out of control, you are going to be spending 100% of your physical and mental energy trying to to recover. Only when you have a moment, might you give a radio call. But only if you feel secure enough that the situation is at least temporarily under control.

Thank you for acknowledging the source of your reporting and its limitations. I wish other commentators were as honest as you. Great job.

I'm an aviator myself. The plane didn't just "free fall" from the sky. Your Mach 0.5 figure doesn't match most of the other reporting which says it was in a powered, vertical dive at nearly Mach 1. Mach .5 won't tear plane structure off on the way down, as we know now. You can't hit the ground absolutely vertical like this unless you are trying to. In my opinion, this was no accident. (ʘ_ʘ)

I’m a CFII. My colleagues and I watched the crash video multiple times, absolutely baffled at what we were seeing. All of us were equally trying to imagine a scenario where a 737 ends up in an inverted nose dive. People don’t understand just how difficult it is to get a plane of that design into this kind of situation. I’ll be following this investigation closely as more information is uncovered. Great video!

I’m brand new to your channel and I thought your summary was excellent. The terrified panic of all on board during those last moments would’ve been the stuff of nightmares. I’m looking forward to hearing exactly what happened because it still doesn’t make any sense to me.🙏Prayers for their families.

I know this is a slight departure from your normally light hearted episodes. However, accident case studies are a major part of aviation. This is a good segment.

Your video is so important. This crash is getting virtually no mainstream media coverage!!

It's behavior on radar was almost identical to Alaska Airlines flight 261. Their horizontal stabilizer broke and forced them into an extremely steep dive. The pilots managed to level it out briefly at a pretty low altitude but they couldn't stabilize it, went inverted, and weren't able to maintain altitude for much longer.

Great work Jenny. I am not one to speculate before we know all of the facts. However, we need to compare the flight profile of China Eastern with that of SilkAir that ended the same way on Dec 19, 1997 on a short flight from Jakarta to Singapore. The SilkAir B737 left flight level 35, 000 ft in a nose down attitude and impacted into the Musi River and disintegrated. No survivors. Investigators concluded the only possible way to achieve the nose down flight profile was with manual input from the cockpit but even that was extremely difficult to maintain in the simulator. A portion of the starboard wing on the SilkAir aircraft broke away on the rapid dive due to high stress levels. Witnesses on the ground heard the wing break away as a loud boom and it was located some 2 kilometres from the main impact site. Pilot suicide was the most likely cause determined by the NTSB and FAA in the final accident report although Singapore and Indonesian authorities have not accepted this as the official cause. Sadly, I believe it will unfortunately be determined this was the cause of the China Eastern accident. The manufactures have not yet commented on the accident. The Chinese authorities are leading the investigation and providing regular updates but I am not confident they will disclose data that indicates the true scenario. BTW, I lost a close colleague on the SilkAir flight and have studied the accident thoroughly over the years.
