We all love riding with our mates, but sometimes we've just got to get out the door, clear our minds and enjoy some time on the bike alone.

As an ultra-cyclist, I spend a lot of time alone and have learnt to love the solitude. For a lot of cyclists, the thought of a long solo ride can be quite daunting, and so as part of this weeks video, i'll share my TOP 5 Tips, for cycling alone.

Would love to hear any tips you guys have to keep the mind busy, especially when deep into a long solo outing on the bike.

Cheers!

I agree with your tips, they're spot on. I would only add one thing - know how to change your tube, and have the tools to do it (levers, pump, tube). If you don't know how to change a tube, maybe someone passing by can help, but you'll need to have a tube and such.

Most important, have an accessory that is able to call for help on its own if you crash (Apple Watch can do that, some Garmins do, etc)

Wear bone conduction headphones so you can listen to podcasts/music while hearing stuff around you, ideally paired with Garmin Varia so you always know well in advance when a car is coming from behind.

I just moved from the very active cycling area of Virginia Beach (which is pan flat) to the outskirts of Pittsburgh which isn't too active for road cycling and the opposite of pan flat haha. All my riding is solo and these tips were SPOT ON! I have (3) routes pending on my mood and have to keep myself self sufficient, I don't have a mate to help if a tire deflates or anything.
I also recommend for people who do not have a friend/family member that can pick them up to download a rideshare program (i.e. uber) just in case you are stuck far from home with no way to get home.

Great video Jack! I ride alone 90% of the time and follow the same protocol. Ive added an emergency rain poncho and a lighter to my kit as it is just a few grams of weight and space, can make a huge difference if needed. Stay stoked Mate 😎

I’ve ridden with others a couple of times and just isn’t as fun as riding solo 😊

I've always preferred riding alone, with the very occassional social or event ride....being self sufficient and flexible without pressure is important. I have more than enough socialising/talking with my teaching job.

Enjoyed the content! A tip: the sound levels of your voice were very varied, maybe invest into a mic (tag on your shirt or standing on the table)?

Carrying means to fix! Snapping chain, during a cold day, there isn’t anything worse! Carrying a Spare quick link, will mean you won’t have to spend ages trying to re-join a chain link or do the dreaded recovery call. Once home, you can then replace the quick link with a proper chain pin, while warm.

nice video, highly recommend getting a better microphone to match your production quality overall

Great video Jack. Love your channel. Fwiw, your mike was playing up a bit on this one; voice was dropping off while you look to be stll speaking at the same volume. Awesome stuff anyway. Many Thanks.

@Jack, what earphones do you use? I’ve been struggling with the windnoise and occasional dislocation of my sony wxb400.
Thanks

For a longer ride, I prefer to stop at a bistro in the middle of my ride.
