Here's a non-nail tech's guide to filing short, round nails. Hopefully it helps and don't worry if you struggle, I feel like I struggle every time. Square nails are easier to shape but harder to maintain in my experience because the corners break all the timeeeee.

I'm a nail tech and you are totally right! The sidewals are such a support and the biggest worry when cutting and filling into the free edge is infection and trauma to the nail bed. And a fun fact for toenails is that if you file them straight across to prevent ingrowns 😊

Nail tech- filing into the side of the nails is usually done after shellac or dip to get rid of the product build-up, not filing the nail, some of y'all may have uneven growth so we do file it down to make it even.

Filing nails like this creator is good, don't dig into your natural nails, but the exposed side is fine

Oval shape allows my nails to be loooong lol
Every time I have the square shape I bump the corners and they break. I also prefer the oval shape, but sometimes I want to change it up, but my nails don’t like it I guess lol

I prefer round aesthetically for myself, but also for ease of movement. I tried square a couple of times and not being able to move my finger smoothly against surfaces (because the corners stop/make clunky noises and feelings) is unbearable.

The oval mirrors the shape of your emerald, so that’s a great way to accentuate both! I’m just learning how to properly file after loving how my nails were shaped professionally. I did have to wait for my glass files to come thought and used a nail clipper before they did, so starting over.

Square nails are good if you want to lengthen the original nail size, just file the corners slightly so that you don't poke yourself or others. It's called squaoval shape, hybrid, best of both worlds! 💜💜💜
