Tried this for about a week and a half back when Youtube was pushing shorts more heavily and found no difference in any of my stats.
However, I upload my shorts ahead of time, which gives Youtube enough time to auto-caption the shorts

I honestly really appreciate captions on youtube shorts as just a viewer, and not content creator. I have this thing where if im not reading what people (on videos or movies) are saying while they’re saying it, I literally cant decipher any words. I was really glad when captions on youtube shorts really caught on.

I prefer subtitles as a watcher so naturally put some in my shorts. I do get longer watch times this way

Yea I have noticed this. On average my shorts get 1-2 thousand views, but the ones I add captions on get 5-7 thousand views. To everyone, make sure you take an extra 5 minutes to add captions.

Why are your captions jumping all over the screen though? Is that a good strategy? Cause I find it a little confusing, would love to hear your thoughts

100 percent makes a massive difference. In my case for a horror gaming channel. Subtitling and animating the subtitles has helped a ton for watch time and VVSA.

YouTube needs to integrate an entire video editing app into the platform app. And have a title assistance tool plus a great thumbnail generator within the app. People are working from the phones. I wish I could talk to YouTube Creators & Programmers about the platform and it’s nuances effectively.

Plus it's obviously great for accessibility in general. Add captions to your long form videos folks :p it takes time and effort but it's worth it

It's easier than ever to add captions too! CapCut, and Adobe make it super easy!
