Student Suing School: Told She Can’t Talk About Nondairy Milk!

A teen in Los Angeles is suing her school, her principal, and the USDA because she’s being muzzled over milk!

School officials told Marielle Williamson that she could only talk about nondairy alternatives at her high school if she also promoted cow’s milk as well. She says that’s unfair because dairy is already heavily advertised in schools while major barriers limit access to things such as almond, oat, or soy milk even though the majority of students in her school are lactose intolerant.

Studies show that up to 80% of people of Hispanic decent are lactose intolerant and roughly 75% of students who attend public school in LA are Hispanic.

Marielle says her freedom of speech is being trampled along with the health of her classmates.

She and attorney Deborah Press join The Exam Room Podcast to sit down with “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to discuss the extraordinary case.

Good job! The whole lunch program needs to be overhauled. Our schools lunchs are a fast food lovers dream. The only vegan / vegetarian options at our school is a pretzel that is hard as a brick, a cardboard cheese pizza and a small, small salad bar.

My son can’t get water at lunch, only milk. He does have a water bottle, but if I forget it, he can’t get or buy water. It’s so bizarre.

To me it sounds more than absurd that milk is so protected by law in the USA.
Milk is indeed very problematic for our health, (even if you CAN digest it), for the environment and for the animals....

I left my school cafeteria job for the same reason. It was really depressing to see all the signs about how milk is good for you and, everything is better with cheese. I felt like a hypocrite hanging up all those signs because I new everything was a lie.

I'm a middle school teacher. Every time I have lunch duty, it's just cheese everywhere. It seems as if nearly half of the calories they serve are dairy.

Water should be consumed with a meal not milk! they should remove it all together. Next we should take a step and suit them for the corndogs and cheese burgers they serve as a “healthy” lunch meal not only they are not healthy AT ALL the don’t contain any vegetables.

Marion Nestle, nutritionist, said the dairy lobby is almost as powerful as the oil lobby, with as much tunnel vision. I had no idea they worked so diabolically to restrict choice. We wouldn't drink the milk of an elephant or any other species that isn't human. It's just so ridiculous.
