Stephen Quake, 'The Cell is a Bag of RNA' | KNI Distinguished Seminar series

On January 29, 2019, Professor Stephen Quake visited Caltech to give the inaugural seminar for the KNI Distinguished Seminar series. His talk, "The Cell is a Bag of RNA", examines the nature of cellular identity, his work on "Tabula Muris", the online collection of single cell transcriptome data supported by the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, and potential therapeutics for IgE antibodies that cause peanut allergies.

Dr. Quake is the Lee Otterson Professor of Bioengineering, Professor of Applied Physics and the Professor of Physics (by courtesy) at Stanford University and the Co-President of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. His group's interests lie at the nexus of physics, biology, and biotechnology. His research is concerned with developing new approaches to biological measurement and applying these approaches to problems of both fundamental and medical interest. Areas of interest include genomic diagnostics, systems biology, microbial ecology, and single cell genomics.

The KNI Distinguished Seminar Series is a monthly series hosted by The Kavli Nanoscience Institute where eminent scientists and thinkers with strong yet varied backgrounds in nanoscience and nanotechnology share their expertise with the Caltech community. The scopes of presentations may range from: recent outstanding scientific highlights/technological advancements, to innovative early-stage research developments, to broader cross-disciplinary topics that are relevant to nanoscience.
