We are in an era of misinformation — and even disinformation, when someone intentionally disseminates false or misleading information. And while there are some bad actors, also important are social and psychological forces that lead people to spread and fall for false information in the first place.

We heard from people who emerged from radicalization, including Caolan Robertson and Caleb Cain, who was profiled in the recent Times podcast “Rabbit Hole.” And we analyzed how a few brave readers interact with news on social media — with help from David Rand, a professor of management and cognitive science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
