China is pushing ahead with a grand plan to merge 11 cities in the Pearl River Delta into one mega economic and business hub. It's called the Greater Bay Area, with each city playing its own unique role as in this economic powerhouse. But integrating all 11 cities into a megalopolis comes with a slew of challenges.

This is what a government should be, forward planning!

This is a rare forward-looking report in the South China Morning Post, and it is very constructive.

Zhaoqing. A beautiful, clean and friendly city. I spent 11 years teaching at a school there. It has been trying for years to be classed as a tier one city in Guangdong but kept failing. Maybe being part of the G.B.A will help it .

This is like a mother having 4 children. And she wants the 4 of them to get along and cooperates, but each sibling have its own personally and way of doing things. Even if the mother have hope and ambition, the success of the project will depends on how well the siblings will behave and cooperates with each other.

I envy China for their development….India is still busy with politics of religion….instead of focusing on development

The difference between these cities can be it's weakness or its biggest advantage over other cities. Great innovation might sprout naturally with these challenging environment.

Imagine if China is a democratic country, can they organize the differences as smoothly as nowadays? No wonder even Socrates hated democracy.

That's not a future megapolis, it's rather a megalopolis or megaregion.

Look at the population and GDP figures and you begin to see who is truly wealthy.

This sounds right. I've imagined that real communism isn't about centralized control, but about local autonomy. If there's too much power in any specific level, the needs of the locality and entire nation won't be met. There must be some balance between individual autonomy and coordination between states.

Those cities look fantastic too.

Isn't SCMP suppose to play horror music whenever talking about China? What's with the sudden tone change?

Every project has some problems. No risk no gain but the dynamics and rewards of integration of the Greater Bay area will drive the process and people will take advantage of the opportunities created,

Workers living in one city where cost of living is cheaper & working in another is already happening in the GBA. While staying in BP International Hotel #bpih in Hong Kong, a worker there told me she lived in Shenzhen & rode the high speed rail from Shenzhen to work in HK.
