Local Radio DJ's fake celeb chat scam - Open-ended interviews

No, your local radio DJ broadcasting from a studio in the middle of nowhere didn't get world famous celebs just popping in to chat - they played you, just like they played this record.

ERASING CARTS?
Note: No, I am not looking to erase my unique NAB carts. The hapless DJ in the video is just a character and as such his needs are ficticious. The wig is (always) a strong indicator that buffoonery is afoot. The joke being played out here was that the DJ had all the wrong carts for his radio station WFTM based in Upper Ramsbottom - there is no WTFM in Upper Ramsbottom - this is also fiction.

You'd be surprised how many people have posted real suggestions for how the pretend DJ could erase carts for his pretend radio station.

They fooled me with this for years. But one weekend I was traveling and heard the exact same interview on radio stations 300 miles apart.

Comedians have historically had fun with these. You can get comedy gold if you rewrite the questions.

Brilliant! They definitely lasted into the 21st century on CD, I ‘interviewed’ U2 definitely live in the studio in 2005 for a major radio station. The band appeared to have rush recorded their side of the interview on the tarmac at an airport, which meant I had to, for no good reason, transport myself to the studio car park to interview the biggest band in the world, after recording ing and mixing airport ambience under my questions and mixing it all together..
This was the management’s idea - not mine - and judging by the texts received during and after the ‘interview’ - no one believed it for a single minute. Toes still curl with embarrassment thinking about it.

I worked for an AM country station that had these sent to us. What I would do was deviate from the script and ask totally different questions than the ones on the script. My questions were such that the canned responses made no sense whatsoever. I... really should have gotten fired from that job.

Worked in radio for over a decade until 2017. Can confirm these still exist, not as a CD or anything, just files you download. Most common use I'd see is for quick promos with a bunch of artist like "Hey, it's your boy Justin Timberlake... Hey it's blah blah blah. Followed by several of them in a row saying "and you're listening to..." then the station's name.

People seemed surprised by this, and the fact that call in request shows are almost never ever taking requests. You just wait till you get someone requesting one of the songs you have cued, then record it, play it over the intro, and ta-da you've got a request show.

Nice to see that Techmoan now has a high enough profile to get these in-depth exclusive interviews.

This was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Al sounds stoned; Mat sounds bored and confused; none of the IDs match; the music is also over the place; the interview is a disaster… COLLEGE RADIO at it’s finest!!! I’d listen to a station like this all day long!!

My dad was a DJ, really hated open ended interviews. Like you said though the whole thing was pre-recorded. I can remember him "interviewing" bands in his home studio for a couple hours at a time to get the timing the way he wanted. He was a secret smoker, and editing those was one of the few times he would smoke in the house.

"The most rock & roll allowed by law!" Would love to hear what an "illegal" amount of rock & roll would be.

As a kid who grew up in the eigthies in the Netherlands, I was already well aware of this. Mainly because a local radio station 'interviewed' Bart Simpson for the release of the "Simpons sing the Blues" (1990) album. The radio dj's didn't even pretend it was a real interview since they were interviewing a fictional character (even though the voice was done by the original voice actress) and just had fun with it on air, pretending Bart Simpson stormed off out of the studio angrily at the end of the interview. As far as I could tell that was even part of the open-ended interview recording.

Al Green: "He had a good stand..."
Matt: "Yeah, he never fell over."
Me: LOL

Let's take a moment to appreciate the insanity that is being unable to play more than a few bars of a song on a disc; literally made by the creator of those songs with the intention of getting them heard by and promoted to a wide audiance.

I imagine some DJ's would have a great time with records like this
"Hey Al, my cousin used to live in an apartment in the same building as you, is that who you got your ideas from?"
"Yeah I got my inspiration from up above..."

I’ve always noticed this. Especially prevalent on Binghamton NY channel the Whale. DJ even adds his little “uh huh” “sure” “right right” responses over the pre-recorded celebrity responses to attemp to make it sound more live 😂

I can't believe you got to interview Al Green. What a privilege.

If it weren’t for copyright, I’d love to see Techmoan do a podcast as a radio DJ using all the obsolete formats as a source.

As a former small town DJ, I did everything I could to avoid compiling these as the final product sounded cheesy and unbelievable.

In the 90s the DJs would say that the artist was "calling in" - I always suspected it was pre recorded.

The US Air Force used these for NORAD tracking Santa Claus clips that radio stations could play on Christmas Eve. I found a rip of the 1974 version several years back with Santa tracking clips on side A, and side B's has great jazzy Christmas tunes played by the NORAD commanders orchestra. And the really fun thing is, it's not copyrighted, because all US government works are in the public domain.

I lost it at 10:40 when you muttered, "Don't interrupt." XD
I think you've presented this format well for what it really was--a very preposterous idea. Well done.
