I'm leaning towards drow rogue. My biggest problem is finding a medical professional who is willing to put me into a medically induced coma until the 3rd.

Thanks for helping pass the agonizing last few days to launch with quality BG3 content and commentary!

You mentioned a good point, for the first playthrough one should just go with their guts! Personality and story are way more important, of course everyone has their own preferences, but I think BG3 biggest strength is the companions and RP!

Another ranged healing (and buffing) option is mage hand. Drop a bunch of potions on the ground and your caster can be your healer, using the mage hand's action to throw potions at party members that need them.

I burst out laughing when you said, "Let me make things worse for you now..." The number of choices for party composition is legit wild. I had so much fun in early access designing full custom parties with all kinds of concepts for both the mechanical side and the RP aspects. Now that we know we can respec the classes and subclasses of our origin party members - the potential goes up even more considering they actually have stories built to go with them.

Whatever you bring, have something that lets you move enemies around. Fog, for example. When you're having trouble with an encounter, forcing the AI to move to a different angle is irreplaceable.

My way of thinking of this in combat is having a minimum of 1 assault, 1 support and 1 artillery, and I also want 1 character that is good with skills including Sleight of Hand. Ideally I want to have my bases covered by 3 characters so I can switch out 1 character from my party for a character that is needed for certain story-specific areas (e.g. Lae'zal when visiting the Githyanki creche). To do this it's important to have characters that can do multiple roles. An example of this is a Bard, Wyll and Karlach; another would be Light Cleric, Laezal and Astarion.

I never really consider "Damage" a role. I like to make sure every character in my party can deal large amounts of damage quickly when needed. Even a Bard can be built to deal large amounts of damage quickly.

Choice paralysis sounds about right. As we approach, I'm leaning towards War Cleric, or Vengeance Paladin/Warlock for the Pact of the Blade and some Eldritch Blast fun (ranged is always nice to have!). I'm leaning more towards the latter since I want my first playthrough to be my custom character, then CHR helps in dialogues as you say!

Ever since I learned that I can throw Healing Potions at people, I'm less worried about not having long-range heals! I rather save the spells for KILLS.

Thank you for your incredible work, Wolfheart! This slow crawl towards launch is a lot more exciting with you covering the topics!

I quite like the Paladin for fitting into so many slots in an ideal team comp.
They're tanks, damage dealers, healers, and have the charisma to breeze through any dialogue.

Two half classes, one full martial, one full spellcaster.
Relationwise. Laezel and Shadowheart have bitterness between them regarding the artifact but might be mended, Wyll and Kharlack the same kinda shared similarities with devils. Astarion and Gale, though seems they might not have much in common

I think worrying too much about this is something people have to be careful of. Don’t worry about optimising, have fun. You can run the game in a variety of ways. Just try and enjoy the game, don’t worry about doing it “right”. You might need to change your companions occasionally or spells, but that is fine. Have fun!

I'm new to your channel, I've been binge watching all your lore videos and I'm loving it, they are so well done. Can't wait for the final game and your uploads!

There are so many things that we just cannot prepare for. I'm personally trying not to overthink it. I'm just going with what is fun for me. Optimized runs can come AFTER my first playthrough. It kind of ruins games for me if I'm overthinking everything the first time. It just gets in the way of appreciating the game for what it is! So that's what I recommend for everyone else. Just go with what you think sounds fun, and the rest of it isn't that important! Adapt as needed whilst playing! :)

I wanted to pick an Origin character (like I did in DOS2 with Ifan and very careful planning of all the schools for the rest of the party) because I might never get time for the second run. But I might start as a bard (I feel like the story of the game is something a bard would tell). So, I will probably pick Karlach, Shadowheart and Will/Gale... Maybe will replace Shadowheart with Jaheira later... But Minsc... oh dear, oh dear...

This is a good video to have out. As much as everyone says "play whatever you want" if you're new to d&d or even new to crpgs in general, then you may not know enough to know what you want, so having an idea of what is a good "default" is important for new players who need to have a bit of a cushion while they get used to the new system.

From a roleplaying "face of the party" perspective in open world and free exploration, play BG3 like you would tabletop. You don't have just one "face of the party, " like many games, you actually do have four. Is your Fighter main character bad at Dex checks? Use the group's rogue. Want to talk to thieves? Use the rogue again to get their class tags in dialogue options. Investigating something involving magic? Use your wizards and clerics for their Arcana checks.

Don't feel limited to just using your main character. It's much more interesting if you use everyone at your disposal.

Here's my part comp. Im going to call it "Boarbardian." It has all melee fighters that buff each other.

Wolf Totem Barbarian (for advantage on all melee attacks)
College of Valor Bard
Oath of the Ancients Paladin
Beastmaster Ranger with Boar

For the single target damage dealer, don't forget warlock with hex and agonising blast deals really reliable damage with eldritch blast. Add in repelling or grasp etc and you add control. And you get spellcasting progression beyond other options like archers.

That said, for pure damage, ranger with archery fighting style, hunter's mark, and sharpshooter is likely the pick and can deal VERY long range dps with a longbow.

Thank you for this. I am thinking about getting this game and was worried about the turn-based combat (which I've never played) and companions. You answered many questions.
