Does anyone agree? | Sunday Rant | Trucking Answers

This week a number of truck drivers were posting about waiting around and nor being paid. Why is that? Let's look at it in the Sunday Rant. I ventured a guess and suggested that if you regularly wait without pay and you feel your pay is not what it could be you could find new employment. Well, DRIVERS were mad about that. They said this is just the way it is. What? Things stay the way they are because people tolerate it. They take no action so nothing changes. I merely stated that drivers who are complaining about waiting without pay are choosing to do so. It is ok with me just don't complain about it. No job is perfect but if you are looking to the government to solve this look again. You should be looking in a mirror to solve this issue. If you have time to complain you have time to take action.

I see it all the time at every truckstop....a lot of drivers are broken people, they have been beaten down by previous jobs and now in trucking. They allow this non payment system to happen because they are broken and weak. They're usually living in dire straights and in fear of losing their job. They could so easily turn this around if they would only organize.

Truth is alot of these guys CANT go somewhere else. They're living paycheck to paycheck and any break in that rhythm would be devastating.

Agree with you Mark, If you continue to allow the company to not pay you they will continue to take advantage of you. If you put your foot down and refuse to run the load the company could let ya go, but there is plenty of other companies who will pay you for your time.

Today's rant rocked! You nailed every part of the "Free Time" effect that companies like Werner, Schneider & JB pioneered back in the '80' s & 90's.

Right on Mark you nailed it again I decided that 30 years ago paid by the hour for everything I do Glad I did. Drivers looking for an hourly pay job should consider that most LTL companies pay by the hour matter where you live for local work you can always make more money than being on the road. I did it for 30 years.

Mark you don't need to worry about me. You were a great influence in my decision to quit driving.

You are totally right, Mark. I would also not sit and not get paid. Germany is the same way. Worse are the Eastern European countries, that pay their drivers low wages and have their drivers living in their trucks for months at a time, but like you say if they choose to do it, it's their own fault. They should have went to school and learned different.

That’s true. It’s like being at a doctors office down at the port: you are expected to keep your appointment but they are under no obligation to keep their appointment! The port itself is all unionized in Los Angeles and Long Beach, but there are zero union drivers down there, unless I’m on aware of it. I have got and then off the port grounds in slightly under an hour, but that is not typical. There is no question that we spend an in ordinate amount of time getting paid zero. Even worse, the Korean mafia he’s a flat rate to go from the Yard to the Port drop a container, and if you’re lucky pick up another one in the same yard. Because of this, the local drivers will never scale a load. Look on Google maps, it is at the 710 and Pacific Coast Highway. We, the linehaul drivers, have to drive all the way from the 110 and Rosecrans (take a look at where that is“ and scale and balance the load i’ll Paul getting paid zero to do so.

Kind of like a battered housewife they just can’t help themselves they got to keep going back for more. Why else would someone go every Monday to the port just sit there for 10 hours lol.

I’m an O/O with 3 years of experience and own my truck and trailer with no payments! I get paid by the load, I charge detention pay after an hour and only drive New England area. That’s how it’s done!!!

Drivers who set without getting paid, makes it hard for everyone.

Hey Mark, keep in mind that a certain company that sponsors you does all these things you ranted about and more. I am routinely wasting hours every day sitting on docks, 2 to 3 times per day. That time adds up and isn't detention eligible. Why can't they pay for that? Why aren't you pushing them or calling them out? Also, stop pay here is intentionally rigged. If you have a 3 stop delivery and the last stop is scheduled for the next day, you're only paid for one stop. Hope you realize that.

I get paid for everything. The day my company refuses to pay is the day I’ll quit. We have a Class A CDL. there’s plenty of work out there.

If drivers won't make the change and not getting paid. We'll then let them sit there for 10 hours

For the people who commented that they are getting hourly plus overtime, could you shout out the company? I’m in mega hell and searching for a better opportunity.
