What is an HMO plan?
HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization. These plans typically have lower monthly premiums but you usually are required to select a PCP (Primary Care Physician) and require a referral to see a specialist. These plans also typically do not include any out of network benefits.

What is a PPO plan?
PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization. These plans typically have higher monthly premiums but offer more flexibility when it comes to using the coverage. Most PPO plans offer some out-of-network benefits and you don't need a referral in order to see a specialist.

If cost is most important, you may want to consider an HMO plan. If flexibility and choice are more important, then a PPO might be a better choice.
