We need more of Terry Tao on Numberphile, I would listen to him for hours.

This needs to be put onto the main channel. I know it's short; I know it's not in the keeping of the usual Numberphile vids; however, it's absolutely the most important thing aspiring mathematicians should know. In the "main" vid Terry speaks about how "school mathematics" isn't the same as mathematical research, briefly. This is the essence of that. And, unfortunately, it's lost—unnecessarily—in most of our mathematics teaching.

Great explanation on how mathematicians and physicists think. Congrats Brady on meeting all these great people and thanks for the awesome work you're doing!

Tao is a very good communicator. Modest, fluent, responsive, considered, honest, and humorous. Very good person, a great scholar and a gentleman to the core...

This is how pretty much every job/skill works. The journeymen know what they don't have to focus on and where precision and fidelity is crucial. It's just rare to have people who can do it with math.

This talk explains what is wrong with mathematical teachings today. We don't explain these things. Kids doesn't even get to truly feel comfortable in basic proves until they've already chosen that they aren't "math people".

He has the freedom so few are granted because he always impressed people enough to give him the fun part.

That's an interesting perspective on maths education. First you gain an intuition for maths, then you filter out any false conclusions so that you can use it rigorously.

Tao didn't say much about when these stages happen during education but I think gaining an intuition and then formalising it might be a repetitive cycle that occurs all the time, and the product of that is this post-rigorous higher level of understanding.

I love this guy.
I want to see more of him.

Tao’s comments on high level intuition seems very similar to something Magnus Carlsen said on the subject of intuition. He intuitively knows the correct move virtually instantly and spends most of his time checking that it is correct and trying to understand why it is correct.

Where are these "More extras to come..."? I really wanna see it! This guy is truly remarkable I probably would've needed years to put these things into words at all and he just casually verbalizes these deep and wise fundamental concepts so offhandedly... I can't even begin to comprehend what must be going on in his head.

Please ask him to do a video on his latest research project or just something else that he wants to talk about.

As a type I am amazed by this view of mathematics. This is a carbon copy of how what came to be my view on drawing, starting without rules, learning the rules and then breaking the rules, knowing what you can get away with. I had a lot of greeat stem teachers in school who allowed me to see the creativity inherent in math, coding, etc. And I recognised that throughout the history of science, the most influential thinkers were always creative, insightful and thinking outside of the box, but hearing someone actually talk about the role that intuition plays in a field that despite what I knew still seemed pretty cut and dry was mindblowing

these two minutes were more intriguing for me than the video on the main channel. i find they keep the simpler content more suited for the average viewer on the main channel and put the profound content in to the extras for this channel

This blew my mind in less than 2 minutes.

More Tao more tao more tao!

I bet hes the type of guy to tell people not to glorify him but i think we will glorify anyone who talks about math as broadly and as guidingly as tao did in this extra footage.

Of course the rigorous phase also _gives_ you the powerful mental tools to use in the post-rigorous phase.

It's like he is talking to an old friend, so easy going and sincere!

I am not even going to be a mathematician but this is exactly how things have panned out in whatever I have done. The biggest challenge I have found is to go back to trusting my instincts after a period of rigorous training.
