Bertrand Russell (Philosophy of Language 3)

Russell's philosophy of language dealt a fatal blow to the metaphysical speculations that we have talked about in previous lecture videos. For reference see my previous videos in the playlist.

Bertrand Russell is one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. Taking up Frege's quest for constructing an ideal language, he introduced many innovations that kick-started a whole new way of doing philosophy - analytic philosophy.

In his paper from 1905 "On Denotation", Russell analysed the sentence "The current king of France is bald," with which he saved the law of the excluded middle and introduced his descriptivist theory of names, also called Descriptivism.

I really appreciate your work man. Keep it up. It's nice to have a review of material every once in awhile in different wording.
Thank you.

Haven't laughed like that in a while. Thanks. Funny and serious, if that is even possible.

I have question sorry if its dumb, but since the logical russell language is only description with no reference in the real world. What would happen if we just take the negation out of the "god does not exist" Proposition. Would that mean god exist ? in that context ? I hopes it makes sense.

There is a third option for statements: Indeterminate.
For example: "Bertrand Russell totally had a man crush on Freud". Is that statement true? Maybe. Maybe not. Is it possible to even know? Maybe. Maybe Russell had a memoir or something. But maybe not. It may or may not be ever knowable. That means you can't just say the statement is "true" or "false".

All language is descriptive of the real. If it doesn't correspond to reality it's simply meaningless, such as paradox, which doesn't exist in reality because it references itself.
