When you think of church history, you think of guys with big beards and big scrolls; you don't think of pastors who put on armour to go to war against medieval knights. In episode 4 of our reformation series, we meet the Swiss Reformer Ulrich Zwingli who even went head to head against our very own Martin Luther! Huyldrich Zwingli was born in Switzerland and grew up a Catholic, however as Zwingli was coming of age, he took a radical shift against the teachings of the papcy and instead led the Swiss in a protestant direction against Rome.

Whether you're Protestant, Catholic, Agnostic, Islamic, Jewish or Atheist - this part of history is essential for understanding the world we live in today.

The first War of Kappel with Zwingli's troops against the Catholic troops ended with the soldiers all deciding they were tired and really didn't want to fight over this, and while the leaders were negotiating, the soldiers all started drinking together, made "Milk Soup" out of protestant bread and catholic milk, they all ate soup and went home. Thus ended the first War of Kappel. The more violent one erupted a few years later. Milk soup is still a symbol of Swiss unity and the spot where the two armies met has a Milk Soup monument beside a nice picnic area.

My family split the at this time. Three brothers left and went to a huguenot colony near Heidelberg in 1649. The rest stayed in st Gallen.

Iconography is so important. It’s the gospel in images and was fundamental in the early church. When the beauty was taken out of the church people didn’t stop looking for it, they just found it in other places. Go to a five star hotel, a casino, or amusement part and see the detail put into the design. Then go to church and look at 4 empty walls and thank Zwingli.

Could you please site your source for the mistress letter. I’d really like to know more about Zwingli and this whole mistress drama but I have not been able to find one source. Thanks

You mentioned Luke 22:19 and passed over John 6. To over simplify this as “ nitpicking” is misleading. The issue of real presence was a big deal. It meant eternal life or death to these guys. The early church would have disagreed with Zwingli on that. They wrote against teachings like these which denied Christ’s body like the Docetists. So Luther believed in the real presence AND doing it as a remembrance as well. Zwingli only saw things as a remembrance.

Repent and trust in Jesus. Hes the only way. We deserve Hell because weve sinned. Lied, lusted stolen, etc. But God sent his son to die on the cross and rise out of the grave. We can receive forgiveness from Jesus. Repent and put your trust in him.
John 3:16
Romans 3:23❤😊❤❤
