Multiply Binomials using the FOIL Method

FOIL is an acronym to MULTIPLY two binomials together to get a trinomial or binomial answer. Find your first, outside, inside and last terms and then combine the middle terms. The result is often a trinomial, but it can be a binomial if the middle term adds up to zero. Another method is the box method, but I feel the FOIL method is better because you can get the trinomial answer mentally.

I learned and like the FOIL method because it teaches students to work toward showing NO work. The box method is great, but I feel it’s too much writing and students have troubles moving beyond it. What is your favorite method?
