Overload Springs, HD Shocks, and Polly Bushings @volvo240life

In this weeks episode I take apart the rear suspension in the 1990 Volvo 240 wagon. After decades of use in a harsh winter environment it's time for a little work. I decided to use IPD overload springs for some extra load capacity along with some Bilstein HD Shocks and Super Pro polyurethane bushings. Getting the wagon one step closer to adventure testing to come.

Say I should have mentioned that the springs I used from IPD provide an extra 300lbs of load capacity.

I did all this last fall... The large TA bushings ate my lunch even with the factory tool! The supplied rod bent and I had to buy 14mm super hardened lengths from McMaster-Carrr to replace it. So glad I will never have to remove the originals again! Also I wore out my 12 ton press and had to replace the jack portion. I upgraded to a 20 ton with a little modification so now I have a compact 20 ton unit! Great video BTW and I am a new sub!

Hey 240 Crew Welcome to Friday! This week I did that rear suspension work that I keep mentioning. This was my first attempt at a little longer episode trying to do a few items. We got things in the back freshened up moving us one step closer to adventure testing to come. I think I may need to try using a different editing program....I've been doing this all with the GoPro Quick app but am having some sound/music issues towards then end. Suggestions anybody?

Well done! My limits as a hobbyist are brakes and suspension. First one because every time I tried, I ended up with no brakes ... the second one because I'm 99% sure I'm going to end up beheaded by a spring LOL. Keep up these great videos!

Where did you get the trailing arm bushing removal tool?

Curious if these bushings are now noisy after grease has been pushed out over time.

It's probably a moot point unless you foresee some spirited driving in the future, but the rear trailing arm bushings will increasingly bind the rear suspension under articulation with a stiffer bushing. Most of the other joints in the system are fine with poly, the panhard bar being the one that cares the least about articulation, but if you find you dislike something about the handling and trace it to the rear, consider a softer stock bushing or the spherical ones that a few outfits sell. BNE does a spherical trailing arm bushing, and a set of torque arms that are half heim/poly.
