Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra - IS THIS UNIFI'S BEST DEVICE?

The Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra might just be Unifi best new device. The Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra is great value for money and comes with the Network Controller Software integrated within the device making it possibly a better option than Unifi non-cloud gateways.

DISCLAIMER: There is an error in this video. Although the Cloud Gateway Ultra has a 2.5Gbps WAN it has 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS,
meaning you cannot fully utilise the 2.5Gbps connection speed. Apologies for this mistake.

Really helpful video….would the gateway ultra work out of the box with a community fibre 1gb connection or would the gateway need special configuration? Cheers

Worth noting the backplane limitation with this device, it has a 2.5 Gpbs WAN port but can never be fully utilized due to the single 1 Gbps link from CPU to the switch chip (the LAN ports). Also means the 4 LAN ports would share the single 1 Gpbs link to the CPU for traffic going across VLAN's. Might not be an issue but worth noting, especially with regards to the WAN port.

Is the Network app the only app that can run on this Cloud Gateway Ultra? No Talk or Protect? Given it has no added storage like a MicroSD card slot, it won't be running Protect, but how about Talk?

All the dream router/express models feel out of date running wi-fi 6 right now. Obviously 7 is the latest but even 6e would be better.

Great Viideo. But I still need to be convinced to put my Network Controller on an actual device. I like having a separate VM running (on my server) which I can easily backup or restore completely independent of the key Unifi Devices. If the Gateway crashes or corrupts and it holds the network controller. I can't just factory reset it, and pop it back into action. No, I need to recover the network controller etc ll first - and do it all via SSH or such. That was why I decided against the Dream machines. I loved the idea and prices of the Gateway Ultra but knowing it has it's own NC put me off. I'm not sure why Ubiquiti can't give us the option of running NC on the device or having it separate. It seems that all their products you have to choose based on the product and not the config. Also, One then cannot have more than one such device on the same site. Such as Point to Point VPN between 2 locations. they have to be on different sites ( well not actually sites as they don't really have sites as they are single site controllers) - And I know they can all connect to one Unif account but still can be convenient to have them on a single network linked by VPN. It's a shame the max is so much more $$$ as the Ultr has a great price point
