In this video I am going to detail what is involved in Paper 1 for the AQA GCSE Geography 9-1 course.
You will be sitting this exam on 21st May 2019 in the afternoon session. It will be a 1hr30 worth 88 marks.
The structure of the exam consists of 3 sections: A, B & C.
You need to answer ALL the questions in sections A & B, but then you have a choice when it comes to section C. This depends on which topics you have studied with your teacher, so you will choose 2 out of the 3 topics: either Coasts, Rivers or Glaciers.
The first thing i always suggest to my students is to read the instructions on the cover sheet carefully before skimming through the entire paper.
You will start with Section A, The Challenge of Natural Hazards. The section will contain a variety of different questions from multiple choice all the way up to a 9 marker with SPAG marks available.
So these are the topics you need to be revising for section A.
–Distribution of Volcanoes
–Plate Margins - destructive, constructive & conservative plate margins
–Earthquake examples - primary & secondary effects and immediate & long term responses
–Why live near hazards?
–Risk Management - 3 Ps - prediction, protection & planning
–Global Atmospheric Circulation - Hadley cell, ferrell cell, polar cell
–Tropical Storms - effects & responses, typhoon haiyan
–Extreme UK Weather - Cumbria floods 2009, or Somerset floods 2014,
–Climate Change - evidence, natural/human causes (Mitigation/adaptation!)
Case Studies
Earthquake examples - Italy 2009, Nepal 2015, or Chile 2010
Typhoon haiyan 2013
Section B looks at the Living World.
In this section you could encounter multiple choice questions up to a 9 marker but this time without SPAG marks.
The topics for revision are:
Ecosystems
Tropical Rainforests
Cold environments or hot deserts
–Parts of an Ecosystem & Distribution/characteristics of ecosystems around the world
–Food chains/webs
–Tropical Rainforests - climate, deforestation - causes/impacts, management and protection
– Cold Environments (Polar/Tundra) or hot deserts
–Alaska (Tundra)
–Antarctica (Polar)
If you have studied hot deserts then you need to refer to your own note or discuss any queries with your teacher.
Each part of section C is slightly shorter than sections A & B.
Coasts, rivers or glaciers and again you only choose 2 out of the 3 sections.
My group this year have just studied coasts and rivers so they will only complete those sections.
In last years exam each section contained 7 questions. Most of the questions were 1 markers, with a 4 & 6 mark question to finish.
•Coasts - you need to show understanding of the following features and how they are formed as well as being able to apply your knowledge to OS maps extracts.
–Waves
–Weathering/mass movement (landslides)
–Erosional processes
–Transportation (longshore drift)
–Deposition
–Geology/rock structure at coastline
–Headlands and bays
–Cliffs and wave cut platforms
–Caves, arches and stacks
–Beaches (sandy/pebble)
–Sand dunes
–Spits and bars
–Coastal management (soft/hard engineering)
–Coastal realignment
Possible case studies - Swanage & the Dorset coast
Rivers - you need to show understanding of the following features and how they are formed as well as being able to apply your knowledge to OS maps extracts.
–Fluvial processes
–Erosion
–Transportation
–Deposition
–Long profile/cross profile
–Interlocking spurs
–Waterfalls and gorges
–Meanders and oxbow lakes
–Levees and floodplains
–Causes of flooding (physical/human)
–Precipitation to discharge (Hydrographs)
–River management (hard/soft engineering)
–Management example
Possible examples could include looking at the River Tees, or the River Severn & its estuary, managing floods in Banbury or the Jubilee river flood-relief channel
