Most people know that camels and llamas will spit at you if they are annoyed. Remember, we are more intelligent so it is our responsibility to learn how they communicate, not theirs to understand us. I think you were too close and your voice high pitched. Try standing back and saying nothing and watch them. If you are calm they will come to you and not spit.
