I had to watch this for a film analysis course in college.

When I left the theater, my friends thought this was a fun movie. For me, it revealed that church was controlling my life, and if I didn't do what my church (the pastor) wanted me to do, God was going to zap me. Christoff is short for Christophane, which is an "image" or "symbol" of Jesus. I caught that right away.

I was ten years old in the 1960s when I postulated that I could possibly be just a character in a book and what felt like 'reality' was my existence in the head of an actual person reading my story.

I based this on the observation that, already in my 'life', I was living a life that was like poorly-written soap opera, but less imaginative. It was almost predictable, yet boring, stupid, and fake all at the same time.

It strikes me that this is not far from 'Truman Syndrome'.
