My grandfather served on the Arizona and survived. After the war he married my grandmother. Fast forward to 2012 he passed away and my grandmother brought me and my dad to the Arizona memorial where she spread his ashes. After our trip my dad and I went over to my grandmothers house for our weekly Saturday dinner. We found her in her bed where she died in her sleep. She died exactly 2 weeks after my grandfather and 2 days after the trip. She held on just so she could spread my grandfathers ashes. She died with a smile on her face. I miss them so much but it was their time and they both died peacefully

It was agreed that the USS Missouri should be placed behind and perpendicular to the USS Arizona Memorial to symbolize the beginning and end of WWII. The decision to have Missouri's bow face the Memorial was intended to convey that battleship USS Missouri is watching over the Memorial.

When you live on an island with so many war veterans it’s like the war is still here. Every December 7th there are memorial services at Pearl Harbor. The attack is replayed on tv. Also the movies where the navy recovered the sunken ships. They removed the bodies. Many are buried at punch bowl. Members of the famous 442 regimental combat team are still alive. They have monthly meetings. Many survivors who worked at the shipyard during the war are still alive. They all tell stories about seeing the planes strafing different parts of the island. My family was there that morning just coming to work at 8am. They survived the bombing and fires. All the years I knew them they never forgave Japan. Dec. 7th services upset them because they had to remember how traumatic it had been to suddenly be in a war.

I was moved to tears while at that Memorial. We took 2 days to visit every public site, ending at the USS Missouri. Every American should visit so you can see & feel this sacred site.

Another fun fact about the USS Arizona is that some of its barrels were salvaged and used to replace the worn out ones on the USS Texas right before D-Day

I live in Oahu and everyone knows and shows respect to those who died at Pearl Harbor. There is also a Pearl Harbor aviation museum that holds all the aircraft of world war 2 and the aircraft that served in Pearl Harbor and even some bullet holes from the attack. It is only open to schools and people who serve in the military.

Visiting the memorial gave me goosebumps and just made my entire body shiver. It’s crazy to think that I’m older today than most of those men who died that day.

The Arizona is still leaking small amounts of oil to this day, also referred to as "The Tears of Arizona"

If I ever have the chance, I want to visit the memorial. I was living with my grandparents in 2021, when the U.S. Navy identified the remains of my great-great-uncle who was killed on the USS Oklahoma. Due to lockdowns, they weren't able to bury his remains in Hawaii like they hoped, but they did manage to bury him at a war memorial in Washington D.C.
God bless the courageous men and women who sacrificed themselves for our freedom. I doubt any of us will ever fully understand this side of the grave how great that burden truly was, but I hope and pray that we will go on to live in a way that honors their sacrifice.

I wish people would stop saying Pearl Harbor was at the beginning of World War II. WWII started with the invasion of Poland in 1939. Also, the US was already unofficially involved in WWII in China with the Flying Tigers in April 1941. When Pearl Harbor was attacked the War was 2 years old and that attack OFFICIALLY brought the entire US into WWII. Desmond Llewelyn (rhe actor who played James Bond's Q) was quoted as saying he felt the US Soldiers were uneducated because in 1945 he stated he had been a prisoner for 5 years which the Anerican stated that that was impossible since the war was only 4 years old.

It’s nice seeing people who care about those who don’t get the spotlight from these conflicts still get to be remembered and thanked for their service

My uncle served on the USS Arizona when Japan. He jumped overboard and survived by swimming to shore under the fire laden surface.
