When you grow up never having nothing and having to do without, you learn to appreciate what you have. Larry was smart with his money.

Man broke his back paving his own driveway. It's unfortunate that the iniury shortened his career, but it was a testament to his character.

As a black man I can say that Larry Legend and Magic have demonstrated some of the core economic values that so many athletes don't comprehend. It takes a boat load of self discipline and character to calm yourself down and not allow a huge increase in your net worth to end up making you go broke having failed to take the future into consideration.

Reminds me of Barkley telling the story of his rookie year when he bought several expensive cars. DrJ yelled at him saying you only need one car, he then went with him to return the cars.

I understand what Bird did. My mom and dad always taught me to take away a certain % of my take home check and act as if I never had it. My parents were born in the 1930 so they knew. More people should have done what Bird did.

When you grow up poor and you go without. You go to bed hungry and utilities shut off. When you get your first job or whatever pays your bills, you look at money differently. I've been poor and I will never go back to that dead-end. Teach your children independence, pride in themselves to save their hard fought earnings. Smart man

One of the greatest players of all time was also just a "regular guy."

Not only one of the best players that every played the game, but one of the smartest. 😊

Saying "No" was the right move. Had he said yes, he would have lost his money, and in a very short time, they would have been right back in the same position. People don't change over night.

The money Larry Bird was paid was great but a tiny amount compared to players today.

Larry's family didn't even own a car. Grew up very poor. But i bet he wished he paid for the concrete work on his mom's driving. He destroyed his back. But to me he is the GOAT.

He was right to say "No." unless he felt like giving his money away. There was no pay back coming.

What's crazy is that since bird so many athletes have had way bigger contracts and weren't half as talented as him which is crazy

Pro sports is replete with well-paid athletes spending large and losing everything. Sad!
