The beams producing heat and flame in the movies isn't a mistake. Heat is a byproduct of force. If you hit something hard, the kinetic energy is converted into heat and light. You can see this in action in places like the Mantis shrimp, which punches so hard it creates cavitation bubbles of intense heat that boils water for a split second.

I’m a really big fan of the one panel where Scott takes his glasses off and the entire panel is just RED

my favorite description of his powers is that his eyes are a portal to the punch dimension

I’ve been reading X-men related comics for over 30yrs. Although I’m not the biggest Cyclops fan, even I can acknowledge the importance & significance of his character. I recognize that in Comics, Movies, Cartoons (Not so much X-Men TAS & X-Men Evolution but especially Wolverine & the X-Men) he has been portrayed rather poorly. Cyclops should be considered the most pivotal mutant. In the future he is responsible for the Summers Rebellion Resistance. His children are debatably considered the most powerful beings in the world. Due to his status, genetics, powers & experiences he should’ve been transitioned to an Omega level or beyond mutant. His brothers Havok, Adam X as well. Vulcan already is. The reasoning is that he was apart of 1. The Twelve. 2. Merged with Apocalypse. 3. Contained the Void (Evil counterpart to the Sentry) in his mind. 4. Possessed by the Phoenix (Phoenix 5 then ultimately Dark Phoenix 5. His powers were altered dangerously & more powerful Post AVX. 6. Used the Phoenix Egg to become Phoenix again during Secret Wars.

I would like to see an 'Old Man' Cyclops story. Like Logan, it'd be cool to see the years of wear and tear his powers put on his body.

Cyclops does use the punch dimension by using his eyes as portals to that dimension which is made up of pure concussive energy. He is also surrounded by an invisible force field that shields him from similar type energy attacks. Cyclop and his brother Havok have blasted each other without even making the other move a fraction as if they couldn't feel each other's blast at all. This is probably what shields him from snapping his neck.

A running theory for Scott's affinity for psychics is that Summer's DNA is particularly powerful and prone towards utilizing exotic energies. We see this backed up by his brothers Havoc (absorbs cosmic radiation) and Vulcan (controls all manner of energy) and Scott himself. Psionic energy seems to resonate well with this, on a genetic level, which is why kids of mixed Summers-Gray genes tend to come out at Omega level (Nathan, Nate, Racheal and Hope Summers are all *upper tier* psychics with energy abilities.)

Was always confused on why there was never an iteration of cyclops that didn’t have to press a button on his visor to shoot. You’d think they’d make buttons on his hands or something like squinting a certain way to activate it otherwise you hold his hand down preventing him from clicking a button and he’s powerless

He is super underrated in all my years I've never heard anyone say he's my favorite character.

I REALLY hope the MCU does Cyclops justice. I was never a big fan of his until I started watching videos like this & about different comic runs etc.
Actually such a cool character.

I kind of prefer the "his eyes are portals to another dimension filled with nothing but raw kinetic energy" hypothesis. I know it's wild, but it's honestly the only explanation I had heard, outside of "It's just a random mutation", and I like the mystery of it. Feels like it fits with his inability to control his own powers without modification or technological assistance.

Scott summers is also unable to turn off his eye beams because he hit his head at a young age

Superhuman neck muscles. What a funny ability if cyclops only had that ability for a mutation.

I like the “power from a different dimensional plane” explanation the most

The fact that Cyclops' eye blasts have no recoil or residual heat at all actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

The only thing I find dumb is the theory about his eyes being portals to another dimension. It just makes infinately more sense to believe that his cells are constantly absorbing solar rays and he can convert that radiation into energy that he releases through his eyeballs as concussive energy blasts. For a fair number of reasons it's just easier to believe that he's a living nuclear reactor that basically melts down every time he opens his eyelids.

As a child I never knew how right cyclops was.

I hated the retcon that states that his eyes are portals to another dimension.
I go with Stan Lees original explanation: his body draws in power from the sun and kinetic energy around him and converts it into energy that is expelled through his eyes. He and Havok dont have a protective field around them, but they rather absorbs kinetic energy (especially eachothers energy blasts) and restock their energy reserves. This absorption works best with radiation energy of certain wavelengths, like UV, and is barely noticeable when it comes to concussive kinetic energy. That's why he can take all of Havocs blasts and not be bothered, but still be knocked out by a strong punch. He does absorb some of the punch, which also explains why he can take punches from individuals with superstrength and not get killed.
Most mutants bodies dont just have one power/ability, but they are mutated to be able to handle their primary mutation.
Just like how Angels mutation isnt just having wings; his bones are hollow to make him weigh less and they're much stronger than normal bones, his eyes are enhanced to be able to endure strong winds and they can see as acutely as an eagle can, spotting things miles away.
This is how Cyclops' neckmuscles can handle the force of his blasts and his sense of knowing how to instinctively bounce them off reflective surfaces is likely also a part of his mutation in its entirety.
It was also established that the only reason why Scott needs his visor to control the optic blasts is because when he and Alex were pushed out of the airplane as it was being attacked by the Shi'ar, and they were parachuting to the ground, Scott hit his head very hard and suffered a brain injury that destroyed his ability to be able to control his blasts when they first manifested a few years later. Had this not happened, he would not need his visor at all.

The retcon of making his eyes dimensional portals was made by a writer that probably has no idea of basic superhero biology and physics and it was lazy writing that I, for one, choose to ignore completely.
