Our Favorite Cold-Hardy Fruit Tree - The LOQUAT!

Our backyard just got its first frost of the winter, and a lot of our trees took a hit. We've been working to build up our microclimates to keep the yard warmer, but we woke up the other morning to see not only freezing temps, but 20 degrees in one area of our yard! But while some plants didn't make it, like the sweet potato vines and possibly some baby bananas, there is one tree that hasn't seemed to notice the cold: our loquat!

The loquat is an extremely attractive, medium sized tree that has an umbrella-shaped canopy. Its leaves are big and dark green, its flowers are really fragrant, and its golfball-sized fruits are super juicy and taste like a cross between an apricot and a mango! It's also one of the earliest trees to produce fruit for us in the spring. Even better, this tree is cold hardy, so it doesn't need any special care in the winter! This tree is absolutely one of our favorites of all-time!

I've grown Loquat down South for 30 years. The LOWEST I've been able to keep them fruiting is 20F. Why? They originated in China and were brought to New Orleans( which still has a lot of them today). Those trees adapted to a milder climate in NOLA. IF you have a bad winter I suggest covering them with a sheet and a 50 gallon bucket of water near the trunk like my great grandparents did. There are many ways to save a fruit tree so, do your own thing. Basically, you don't want the buds or flowers to freeze(die) so, they will make fruit. The trees love 6 to 8 hours of sun but, can grow while partially shaded. They just don't produce like they could. They say they're tropical fruit trees but, I live in Zone 8a, Mississippi and I just have to worry when temps drop below 20 degrees. I have several fruit trees I have to cover so, nothing new here. Cold winters or snow? Bye bye tree unless you greenhouse or container grow. I've grown one to fruit in a pot so, it's doable. You have to trim it and all that Bonsai business. The fruit is worth it and so are the medicinal properties of the whole tree. Look it up and see if it's for you.

Just wonderful to watch your videos. Just be careful when making tea with loquat leaves use only the older ones the new ones are green/grey in color and contain a bit of cyanide.
