Charity has plenty of social and economic advantages. Tax exemptions, good reputation, government support.
Only a small handful of rich people actually engage in charity out of legitimate care about the cause. And that small handful is usually not involved in relevant topic charities. They usually spend those resources in local wildlife shelters or reforestation. Things no longer talked about in media.

Microsoft has coders in Kenya that use C# and C++. Their standard of living is so good that Kenyan coders in USA are relocating back home. This is what should be encouraged, not charity.

Even then I knew he wasn't there to help anyone.
They set up a banquet in one of the few "fancy" locally owned restaurants

When oil company monopolist, John D. Rockefeller, discovered how hated he was, and that the US Govt was after him for all types of "highway robbery, " he enlisted a public relations guru to help him change his image. And like Bill Gates, that's exactly what happened. He became this great philanthropist (for tax breaks of course), giving away millions, and even handing out dimes during his public appearances (which were worth MUCH more back then). And people people are fickle and memories are short, it worked.
