Congress of South African Students' Siphiwe Maname, Johannesburg City's environmental health director Peter Manganye and Africa Diaspora Forum's Dr Vusumuzi Sibanda discuss the escalating tensions between Soweto residents and foreign nationals.

Maname says it's a lie that there are inspectors in the townships who inspect foreign-owned spaza shops for compliance. "It is a lie, maybe they have reported lies to him [City of Johannesburg's environmental health director Peter Manganye]," he says.

I always say if South Africans support only local owned business, this people would not be able to continue opening spaza shops, but because we support them we will continue to suffer like this.

Why not have a whistleblowing line for community to report concerns when they see expired foods, dirty shops, etc. Spaza shop owners said they tired of health inspectors coming to their shops threatening them for bribes.

Foreigners owning these spaza shop don’t consume the goods sold in their Spaza shops. They go to spar .

The same with hijacked buildings and each incident, they stop checking and life goes on without any action taken.

Even if it contained the substance...he wouldn't tell us. . . they are doing their out most best to protect foreign national spaza shops. I'm still amazed that they are not regulated.

We don't have leaders in the City of Joburg, there's no action and only when there's an incident, they go to that area only and after they go back to their offices. No proactive but reactive. Same incident happened last year
