Briston Maroney says a lot with a little. With only a homemade EP and a few singles to his name, Briston has identified himself as a voice for his class of outsiders. His nomadic past is stitched together in songs; in one moment, his guitar tone is drenched in the Florida humidity, and on the next, his harmonies echo through the Laurel Canyon. His passion is always heart-on-sleeve but never off the rails, and on songs like “Freakin’ Out On the Interstate”, he knows how to let the music drive the conversation. I have this song on many of my playlists, but though I do love the song, it always brings memories of my ex-girlfriend. I didn’t have much luck in finding a significant other but after I got to know her, I thought that she might be the one. My feelings would develop more and more as time would go on and right at our winter ball she confessed her feelings towards me, one of the best nights of my life. We would soon start dating and everyday felt like bliss with her. She would be there for me when I felt like I was breaking down, as I would do the same. She was my first everything. She would always reassure me that even on the chance that we didn’t work out she was there for me. Little did I know that it would all change as the pandemic would hit. It altered our bonding and our priorities as we both worried about our families. Before I knew it, she wanted to break up, not because feelings being diminished, but as she thought it was the best decision for her at the time. Even with this heart breaking news, I couldn’t bring myself to hate her in anyway as she helped me in so many ways. This song, to me, would be my constant reminder of how much she would effect me and how much I’m grateful towards her, as she broke up with me on June 3rd. Thank you Briston Maroney for such a beautiful song.
