Faros Lefkimis Corfu Greece

Faros & Alykes (Salt Wetlands) Lefkimis consists of a peninsula about 2000 acres in southern Corfu, north of the town of Lefkimis. They are one of the most important wetlands on the island. The flat wetland area was used from the time of Anjou (13th-14th century) as a salt marsh. The marsh produced salt until 1998. Now Alykes Lefkimis belongs to the Natura 2000 network as a Special Protection Area for birds and as a Special Area of Conservation for habitats and species.
More than 180 species of birds have been recorded in Alykes. Several of them are endangered or belonging to a protected status. In recent years large numbers of flamingos appeared, surpassing the 3000 people of the village in May 2011.
