Loot, the Key to Everything

I love the video and thought I would share a bit of my take. We just got out of the phyrexian invasion plot line which for the most part the people I talk to/play with were happy with. I still wish it was done a bit differently but overall I was ok with the sets. I think its kinda cool that they've taken some time to give us some more what I would consider silly sets now as a break from the seriousness of the past plotline. I don't think Karlov Manor was handled well but I think they nailed the aesthetic, and this set achomplishes the same thing. MTG to me has always been the strongest when we promote different ideas, art forms, stories, and people. It's what brings more people into the hobby. And a product made for everyone is a product made for no one anyway. There are so many things wrong with wizards right now, like their lack support of certain formats, the oversaturation of commanders, and personally to me, the pace they are pumping out sets. I don't think a card of a cute creature drawn in a different artstyle is "everything that's wrong with mtg right now."

Loot is just the epitome of something that's been happening for a while. The art has gradually shifted to a very generic fantasy happy-go-lucky art style. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the art is bad, it just doesn't belong in MTG. These changes aren't made for enfranchised players. This card is marketing for new and recently started (2-4 years) players. It comes at the cost of what the enfranchised players enjoyed. You mentioned baby Yoda. You realize that the vast majority of long term Star Wars fans hated that right? It's exploiting and making a mockery of the pre-existing themes of the IP.

My gripe with this game (started with 8th edition back in the day) is that I dont feel connected to the game anymore. I started playing when a friend showed me some of his cards (was around Odyssey I believe) and I fell in love with the art, the settings and the storytelling through the cards. Now with a new world every 3 months, the arguable powercreep, all that Draft Set or Play Booster babbling and the silly and generic sets, MtG sets feel like Fortnite season or something straight out of Overwatch or League of Legends. My problem with loot isnt the card itself, but its the epitome of a trend I dont like in MtG, that alienates me as a player and its illustration art is from the frickin person that does the League of Legends champion illustrations QUITE LITERALLY.
I play this game because my playgroup is invested and I still feel quite fond and nostalgic about it, but my heart left the game pretty hard and now I cant even cope about the obvious crap anymore. Loot is not the problem, its the final nail in my resolve to stay positive.

I like listening to your videos bro! Not surprised you got to 150 subscribers so soon. I like getting my Magic news and content on YouTube and it’s refreshing that you just talk and act normal and candidly and don’t use a stupid voice or gimmick or anything. Cheers dude!

It’s a double edged sword when changing your product to try and bring in new people. You risk losing your existing customers which is why new isn’t always better. I’m pretty biased about the artwork. I started playing around Onslaught’s release and the sets around that time have my favorite artwork. Fantasy with a sprinkle of edge. Most artwork I just find bland. I’m to the point where I’m trying to make my own artwork on proxies.

There's plenty of things about mtg to be critical of. Meanhwile some people are mad a new character is too cute.

Hey, good news! this video has earned you a follow, because it's a pretty measured response and... let's be honest, Magic getting a JRPG mascot character is right in line with any given shark that was jumped in Neon Dynasty, let alone things like... Gilder Bairn. Yes, it's blatantly clear that Loot is a product of the marketing team, but I say.... let 'em cook before we instantly bemoan how much something sucks

I mean Nine years before the events of Outlaws of Thunder Junction, during the time Jace Beleren was part of the Infinite Consortium, Tezzeret sent him to the then unsettled plane of Thunder Junction to investigate Maag Taranau, to find something Nicol Bolas was afraid of.[3] Jace detected a slumbering, childlike mind deep within the vault, but could not get in. After relaying this to Tezzeret, they never discussed the vault again.

I think you understimate the amount of grief Wizards caused in recent years. They made all kinds of things to deviate from Magic like non fantasy settings, cards difficult to read because of the layout, power creep, woke ideology and others that now the smallest change into another direction is bashed into oblivion to try to get them back in the good path.

If anything is cashing in on baby yoda, it's Yuma and Kirri from the Desert Bloom commander decks. A stoic outlaw who stumbles across a strange green child with mysterious powers and decides to raise it? That's 100% the Mandalorian, and as someone who was a fan of The Mandalorian, I'm really excited about it. I'm excited for Loot too. I've been a fan of the Jace/Vraska relationship since it was established back in original Ixalan block, and seeing them advance in their relationship and adopt a magical furry kid makes me happy. Totally agree that people who don't like Loot/OTJ in general are looking for things to be mad about

I started playing in 2002 and quit in 2018 tired about the planeswalkers because they were "against what mtg is" according to my view. Coming back to play commander two weeks ago after long time out of the game. I am realizing now that if was not because of those changes probably there will be no game to come back to after so long. Lot to think about. What is the real spirit of something, and what is what corrupts its original spirit or idea that is detrimental? I have no clue.

My advice for you as content creator, do not get crazy and invest lots in your set up. Your opinions are authentic and I am sure that people like your video because of that. Evolve step by step. And good luck! : )

even if people dont like the art for the card, its just a good card. im gonna build this because its a good value engine on a commander

It's because magic players are cry babies, plain and simple.

people are afraid of change people want magic to stay exactly as it was in 2006 no universe beyond (even though it brings in new players like me with the godzilla cards) no secret lairs and the same old vintage style art and i love loot and i like how in the vault there’s “loot” and his ability is literally looting i find that hilarious and flavorful the og art is ehhh but i do like his alt art

Yeah, we can bitch about the story, lack of flavor, terrible card designs, legends out of place but Loot it’s fine (no joke)
