Surfing an inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board is a lot of fun and a great way to get into the surfing part of SUP sport. ISUP surfing is a little different than standard surfing, the shape of the inflatable board makes it tricky to catch waves. But there are definitely some techniques you can learn to make surfing an iSUP possible.

We are really happy to invite @Casey Willax to share some iSUP surfing tips with you! Casey had years of surfing and snowboarding experience, and we hope these tips will help you get the most out of iSUP surfing!

😱😱Impressive!! That's some crazy balance skills by Casey! I can't even go through waves standing on my board!

This brought back memories. I learned to SUP surf on an inflatable...a Shark longboard style iSUP. It was only four inches thick so it didn't have the 'corkiness' of a six inch board. It inflated to 18 psi, so was (mostly) good and stiff. A nice upturned nose to minimize perling or getting punched by the froth on the way out.
My own pair of pennies:
1. Anything more than waist high will be impossible. You'll be perling all the time.
2. Getting out is a matter of timing and watching for the clear patches. If the wave breaks just before it gets to you, you might still have a chance if you drop to your knees well back. As the froth hits, reach forward into the pile and give a good stroke to get the nose up and over... or at least not lose as much ground.
Although I use a hard board these days, I keep my iSUP for the occasional giggles. I even bought a Gong surf specific model for travel purposes.

That looked super fun. I've never surfed, but I paddle in puget sound. Next time we head to the washington coast Im giving it a whirl.

This video is awesome! I've always wanted to try surfing my iSUP, I probably won't take my board to surf a 3-4 ft waves like Casey did, but thanks for these great tips! I will get there one day!

I live on the North Shore in Hawaii next to Haleiwa.

Would like to surf on the paddleboard. Should I get the inflated one from Costco? $400 or a solid board say 10’ 30” 4 1/2 inches.

5:30 was slick! Used the upward momentum at crest of wave to pop up onto your feet. I saw you dude!

Great presentation, surfed my iSup a few times, much mind shifting required from a normal hard board. But fun, which is what it’s all about.

K38 just a lil south of Jesus monument. Such a spot. May need to get a paddle board now. I learned -ish in Mulege and it was hella fun.

Ha! Just the video I needed. Was looking for an iSUP for small days when I can't surf. Perfect! Great video.

Dude, you’re just chilling and having fun out there. I was fighting for my life on my ISUP today 😭 I got rocked twice and was struggling to recover. Thanks for the video and reminding me that it’s not that deep haha

Just got my SUP and looking to do this. Curious if anyone uses a tether on the paddle to prevent losing if you accidentally let go?

You can easily catch small waves with a isup. While everyone else was having a hard time catching waves with normal boards, my isup was doing magic

Looks like fun! How do people not lose their paddles? Seems like a wrist leash might be a good idea? Maybe too many cords to be tangled up with.

Thank you very much for this beautiful and instructive video 😊
Is the board you're using a 10'6" board?

Very cool, thanks for posting! My first time SUP surfing was on an inflatable in knee to waist high waves and it was super fun.

Nonchalantly throws surfboard on the stones. Must have a ding repair business.

Super goofy and awkward. Not made for surfing. Hopefully one day companies will make one for surfing, i've seen cheap, good ones for $99 but you can't surf with them.
