I communicated with Dan at Green Power Science, and he pointed me to this video entitled "Storm Preparations Power Outage." His brief discussion of lead is at 18:50.

He apparently detected lead inside the tube, found it was easily removed with vinegar and alcohol, and concluded it was merely a residue from manufacturing the coatings that are on the outside of the inner tube. That's not definitive, but it's something.

A further, more worrisome note:I came across a video posted by Clean Republic, an outfit that sells the 20-inch tubes. The title is "Inside passive solar vacuum tube. Boils water in the sun!" The fellow shows a broken tube and indicates that although the absorbent coating is on the outside of the inner tube, the reflective coatings are on the inside of the tube. This video suggests that water placed in the tube would be in contact not merely with glass but with at least one of these coatings.

Dan also said: "The evacuated solar tubes are safe for cooking ... liquids that are in direct contact with the glass. The glass is made of 100% pyrex. Just clean before use.

After further communication with Clean Republic, I'm satisfied that both the absorbing and reflecting coatings are on the outer surface of the inner tube and that water placed in the tube is in contact only with glass. The apparent statement to the contrary in Clean Republic's video (the one I pointed to yesterday) is a bit of sloppy language. I'll be buying some of these tubes when I can.

Please post info on where you obtained the evacuated tube. Prices I've seen have been substantially higher than $12 figure you cite.

A guy who goes by the name Clean Republic sells 10 of these tubes for $99 on eBay. This is who you bought from, I take it? Clean Republic tells me he believes the inner surface of the inner glass wall is untreated -- that is, coffee or tea is in contact only with glass. But he said he cannot confirm this and "cannot guarantee that [fluids heated] in the tubes are safe for human consumption." I suspect he's correct, though. What is your understanding?
