Why I sold my first Chanel Bag - storytime about my disappointing Vintage Chanel experience

In this storytime video I share with you, why I sold my first Chanel bag, which has not been my Chanel Jumbo Classic Flap but a Vintage Chanel tote bag from the 1980. Even though the leather quality has been very good on this Vintage Chanel, the quality of everything else (from the stiching and the handles, to the inside) has been quite poor and not the way I would have expected it from a Chanel bag. Sadly I was very disappointed by my first Chanel handbag and disappointed from Chanel quality in general. I had to sell that bag on and learned my lesson.

Hi Mary! great comparison with the zara tote! But yes vintage chanels are tricky, the conditions differ alot, depending on how it was cared for. I had a similar experience and sold one of my vintage chanels as well, maybe i should do a storytime too. TFS dear!!

There are different levels in vintage Chanel bags. From my personal experiences, in general, the ones made in France were better made then the ones made in Italy.

Especially, on the gold platings. Most of my French made Chanel vintages were plated with thicker lever of gold, expect for my vintage WOC. That WOC was made in Italy, yet the gold hardwares were well coated with rich gold alloy.

Hi Mary, I don't own any Chanel bags but I do have a vintage Diana in my wishlist. Your video came at the right moment as I was just thinking to myself that it might now be time to start saving up for this bag. This is a reminder for me that I have to set my expectations, Chanel or not. I have experienced being disappointed with a luxury bag a few times (LV😔) or at least, not being wowed when I expected to be. Sometimes I think maybe I built up the experience in my head too much after saving up for it for so long or lusting after the item for years. I'm always surprised to see that my bags from the luxury houses aren't better than my stuff from Coccinelle or Coach. And in the case of 2 of my LV bags, their quality isn't even on par with the quality of my contemporary designer bags. Sorry to hear that you've been disappointed twice over now by Chanel but glad to hear that you got your money back on the tote at least. Seems like selling Chanel could actually be better than buying Chanel!😆

Hi Mary, I don’t own a Chanel bag, just two slgs. Chanel is so expensive now, and preloved prices are sometimes over retail so it’s almost impossible to get a bargain. I can understand why Hermès bags are so expensive, I have to say the craftsmanship is exquisite, but I don’t see that with Chanel. I recently compared the Chanel cardholder to YSL, and at double the price, you have to wonder if Chanel is really worth the money or the hype. All that aside, I would like to explore a classic flap, but cautiously.

This is so weird that you just uploaded this video, as I’ve been feeling this way about my first Chanel bag too!
I’ve lusted about having a Chanel for about 12 years so I saved up to get one. I of course wanted a vintage, because of the ‘great quality’ and the 24k gold hardware. I instantly fell in love with the Chanel Diana, and the story behind it etc.
I searched and searched and found one in good vintage condition and bought it. I didn’t get that “feeling” when it came in the mail and I opened it….. so I was instantly underwhelmed 🤷‍♀️
even though, when I looked and admired her I thought she was so beautiful. Over a year has past (I know I hadn’t used it as much as I would like to -due to the Pandemic) but when I saw it sitting there in my closet it was giving me guilt as it was my most expensive bag, but just sat there 😔
So I have decided to part with her, even though part of me doesn’t want to because of the story and how I got to eventually buy my ‘dream bag’.

My first experience of a Chanel bag was in-store, I was looking for something specific but of course, it wasn't available, so the CA brought out a few other pieces not even remotely similar to what I'd asked to see! Even so, I was expecting the clouds to part, sunlight to bathe the counter and angels singing when I first touched these hallowed bags... I have never felt so underwhelmed! 🙄 They were all kind of 'OK', but nothing special. I preferred the leather & hardware finish on my Gucci & Saint Laurent bags! 🤩 TFS, it's good to know there are others out there who question the Chanel craziness! 😘💕

Hi Mary. Thanks for sharing. Yeah that tote is... Agree that I would question its authenticity.
I have a vintage rectangular mini in lambskin and I absolutely love it. The lambskin has a more buttery texture, like a thicker coating. The current lambskin is more matte in comparison.
If you are still looking for a preloved jumbo, I have very good experience buying from the purse affair. Their jumbos are going for about AUD7000-8000. I think that's like EU5000, if you are willing to take the plunge before the trend returns and prices go up again xx

When I saw your title I was first like *GULP* because a vintage Chanel bag is definitely on my list!! And I have also been eyeing on some non-flap bags because they would be more affordable, to get my toe "tipped" into the Chanel pond. So needless to say, I'm sad to hear about your experience. But also good to know what to keep in mind when scrolling down the vintage sites!
