A review of the Sony 16-55 F2.8 G Lens. Is it the best lens for Sony APSC cameras?!

In this video I review the new Sony 16-55 f2.8 G lens, I show photo examples, and I also show examples from both the Sony a6600 and the Sony a6000. This lens is really just an all around great travel, street, landscape, and even a portrait lens. It checks a lot of boxes, but is it worth the price tag?! It might just be the best walk around lens for the Sony a6000 series. Let me know what you think!

(...I want it!)

“Glass before Ass” I always say.
Optics are always more important than camera body.

I ordered the lens I can’t wait to get it. And I do have the Sony A6000 and I didn’t notice a difference between camera A and camera B

This is probably a late comment on your video, but hey!!! Loved your saying about it is not about the camera house, but it is for the most part about the lens.
Many “pro” youtubers out there pump up the camera house for no reasons sometime.
Looking forward to dive further into your channel.
Keep up the good work!!!

Hey everyone share this with your friends and tell them to watch it so Kyle can buy this lens.

I have the Sigma trio (16, 30 and 56), but I prefer to carry the least amount of equipment possible. From all the reviews and sample images I've seen so far the quality of the Sony 16-5mm F2.8 is more than adequate for the type of photography I do. My Sony 16-55 F2.8 arrives tomorrow, and this is the lens that will stay on my A6500 most of the time. After using the Sony 16-55 it could be possible that I no longer need my Sigma primes: only time will tell.

Image quality on the a6600 looks very similar to the a6000. I am planning to get the a6600 because it has: continuous eye af, a larger battery and grip, and in-body image stabilization. Not to mention better weather sealing, built-in intervalometer, and several other updates.

I have recently purchased this lense for about 1050 USD (down from 1200 USD) where I live. I gotta say it is super sharp and has amazing color reproduction. I'm shooting with A6400 with no IBIS. Even though neither the lens or the camera have stabilization you can get really sharp images above 1/80th shutter speed, hand held. I've been shooting before mainly with 18-105G F4 which is ok after post processing if you're not pixel peeping or zooming in 100% but Sony 16-55 G blows 18-105 G out of water. When Sony finally releases an APS-C camera that has decent IBIS the combo will be one helluva beast even for low light situation where shutter speed can go down to 1/10th sec. I don't think this lense will ever drop to 900 USD for the quality images it produces and I don't expect the competition to deliver a similar lens; Sigma has already released 16/30/56 F1.4 lenses therefore a zoom lens covering that range would kill the sales of these 3. My recommendation is if you see it on sale for about 1000 USD just grab it and wait till Sony releases a camera body with upgraded IBIS which must happen in the forseeable future.

I believe the reason it has no OSS is to force all cry babies to buy either 6500 or 6600 for the IBIS which is really really bad in comparision with Panasonic. It helps with stils on the long end but is horrible for video work. I think it's a dumb idea from Sony not to include OSS as there are so many A6XXX users that would buy this lense without hesitation. If you could put it on A6000 body which gives pretty much the same IQ as on 6500/6600 since the sensor has not been updated in five years people would buy it regardless of its hefty price tag. Sony are simply greedy.

Oh and yes, I do hate swapping lenses. I think this combo will work for me about 95% of the time, indoors and out. The only other lens I plan to use is the Sony Zeiss 55 f/1.8 for multi-row panoramas. That lens might also go by the wayside if the new zoom lens proves to be nearly as sharp at 55mm. Even then, I'm only carrying 2 lenses. I think this lens is a no-brainer for anyone who is plans to continue using an APS-C camera. Of course, it is expensive, but there will be price drops and used copies available within a year or so. Hmmm... maybe I should wait a little longer... oops, I already sold my 16-70! Oh well.

I have a NEX-6 that I use for travel and family photos. Lenses 16-55 pancake zoom I never use, 18-200LE which is my main travel lens but it’s soft, a Zeiss 12mmf2.8 which is excellent and a 50mmf1.8 which is having some focus issues necessitating frequent reattachment which is becoming un-useable for family photos.
Now I’m trying to decide on new kit.
1. Buy Sigma prime 30 and/or 56 f1.4 or Sony 35mmf1.8
2. Buy the bigger Sony 16-55 f2.8
3. Buy the A7iii and a 24-70 f2.8 Sigma

Hello, please if you got a minute answer me.... Is the Sony 16-55 F2.8 G absolutely silence like the 16-50 oss kit lens... at video work...? because i got the sigma 16mm 1.4 (an exelent lens, BUT unfortuantly the electronic moter on it, makes mach noise at video work at autofocus ...! Thank you for your time ..

I don't need this lens, certainly not for that price, but I can understand that many people have it on their wish list. Personally, I can't think of any situation in which the 2.8 aperture is going to save me. Under normal circumstances, 4.0 will do and in low light, I use a 1.4 prime.
As to sharpness; what do we really need? on my 65" TV or printed photo book, I really can't see the difference between shots I took with my Sigma 1.4 16mm and 10-18mm at 16mm even though everyone says the Sigma is way sharper. I guess post-processing RAW files eliminates the differences that others can perhaps still see.

Thanks a lot for this video. Really appreciate it. Just a question, do you recommend this lens to take fashion photos (withour a tripod) combined with a Sony a6100? Thanks in advance and thanks for all your great videos

If you had to chose between buying the a6600 or the 16 55 2.8 and stay with the A6000 and for example the 18 105 f4, what would you do?

I am taking a trip to Seattle. I just ordered this lens to reduce the number of lenses I have to take. I have a feeling I will love it

I have the a6500 and have been using the Tamron 28-75 along with the sigma 16 to cover wide shots. This will make things easier.

Huge fan of your reviews man! I'm looking for a versatile lens like this for travel! Do you think this lens is worth it when paired with a Sony a6100 (w/ no IBIS) for solely photography?

Well, that lens is the perfect fit for me. It will fit perfectly with my old faithful Sony A6000.
I know there is no stabilisation in it, but no problem for me, I do only pictures, no video at all with my camera. With my Sigma 60mm (old model) without stabilisation, I done picture at 1/25th sec. and it is sharp! (Note I didn't drink 7 coffees before I've done those photos at that speed.)
My picture will look the same quality then with the Sony A6700. I love it! 😊😇 ♥♥♥💞

Great video as always and you're killing it with your wisdom. Glass is always the way to go to improve your pics. This will be my next lens purchase down the road, hopefully the price will drop. I agree with you and $1000 is the most I think it is worth.
