Tom Volf’s MARIA BY CALLAS is the first film to tell the life story of the legendary Greek/American opera singer completely in her own words.

Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs—nearly all of which have never been shown to the public—the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time.

Assembling the material for the film took director Volf four years of painstaking research, which included personal outreach to dozens of Callas’s closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera’s biggest stars, reads her words.

What a miracle was Maria Callas, an unbelievable opera voice! I’ve learned about Maria Callas when I was a little girl. My father used to mention her and her greatest voice of the world every time he heard her on the radio. Many years later, I came to America and could hear more of her great voice due to new technology. I miss her every time I listen to her, though I have never seen or met her. I saw this I was floating on the sidewalk afterward singing! I wonder if those dear young men waiting in line to see her at the MET in 1960 ish? are still alive and will see themselves in this film. They must have enjoyed that performance....She was a genius, resplendent, transcendent, a magnificent woman.

You people have no idea how much trouble I went through to watch this. This isn 't avaiable in my country on streaming services. So I downloaded it and then spend like 2 hours synchronising subtitles with the footage because they only speak like 6 languages this film.

So worth it.
