Hong Kong’s national security police raided the student union office at the University of Hong Kong on July 16, 2021, as part of an investigation into a now-withdrawn motion “appreciating the sacrifice” of a man who stabbed an officer before killing himself. The controversial motion, which was passed by the 30 representatives of the student union council on Wednesday last week, expressed “deep sadness” at the death of the lone attacker who stabbed a police constable on duty in Causeway Bay on July 1, before turning the knife on himself. Members of the union’s executive committee soon apologised, stepped down and withdrew the motion, after the Security Bureau and the city’s education minister condemned the resolution the following day. Police also searched the offices of the student-run video production team Campus TV, and student magazine Undergrad. The operation was launched three days after the university severed all ties with the union, accusing student leaders of “serious misconduct”.
