Before i putted my alocasia in leca i grew the roots in perlite. The once I putted directly into leca dyed of. Maybe the transition from soil to leca is bigger than from Soil into perlite.

I would look into it more but from what I’ve seen, pothos actually like to be rootbound. So be careful! My friend who try to help her rootbound pothos, accidentally killed hers.
