Coming up, the story of an epic collaboration between one of rock’s most iconic rebels Joan Jett and one of the most prolific songwriters of the era Desmond Child. This rock legend had a bold, risqué song title that no one would dare play, but she had the riff to back it up. All she needed was some expert help to craft a radio-friendly title and some unforgettable lyrics. The song, eventually titled I Hate Myself for Loving You became a big ol’ hit, making waves in pop culture, with NFL fans, and even catching the attention of a fellow Hall of Fame singer who tried to use the chorus as a pickup line at her hotel door. You’re gonna love this saucy narrative…NEXT on Professor of Rock.

Today’s story is a great lesson. To start out, Joan Jett is one of the coolest to ever pick up a guitar. I’ve seen here live a bunch of times including this last summer and is such a natural. She is a true trailblazer of the Rock Era, as a co-founder of the all-female rock & punk band the Runaways, and with the Blackhearts, the band that has backed up her dynamic solo career. Under the visionary guidance of her manager Kenny Laguna, Joan went solo after leaving the Runaways in ’79.
On her 2nd solo album, she crushed it- totally dominating the airwaves in 1982 with one of the biggest hits of the year, and three consecutive Top 20 singles: the #1 smash “I Love Rock n’ Roll,” followed by “Crimson & Clover” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me.” But, after that incredible cycle of breakout success, Joan’s stock cooled, and she experienced a 4-year drought with no hits. Being the intrepid fighter that she is, Joanie bounced back in ’87, with a hit movie, and one of her most successful singles- “I Hate Myself for Loving You.” But it was almost a completely different title and song. So I chose my word very carefully when I described Joan Jett as “intrepid.” She had to be in order to make it in a male-dominated business. At many gigs, the quintet of The Runaways were ridiculed & sometimes spit on, by men in the audience. Joan recounted one of those nights that they were spit on while touring through Europe. It was in the early 80s when Joan was on tour as Joan Jett & the Blackhearts- opening for The Scorpions in Spain and Italy. Joan found that those countries had such a macho culture, and seeing a woman on stage playing guitar just didn’t sit right with them.
They couldn’t understand what she was doing, and they absolutely hated it. The crowd was vicious—screaming every profanity you could imagine and calling Joan every filthy name in the book. And the spitting?.. It was relentless. As gross as it sounds, Joan said that she was literally covered in spit from head to toe; she said it was hanging off of her! After a while, their attacks became very personal for Joanie. Her fearless nature took over. She went from being scared to getting angry & indignant. Joan’s attitude was, ‘Bring it on!’ Do whatever you’re gonna do…You’ll have to kill me to get me off stage.
