Oculus Quest 2 Teardown: Into The Metaverse

In this video we head into the metaverse (sort of) to see how the Facebook/Oculus/Meta Quest 2 VR headset works, from the inside out. It may be a couple years old, but it is still the most popular cordless VR headset on the market, and we need all the practice we can get for the upcoming VR boom.

The amount of engineering put into the quest 2 amazes me every time.

was wondering what it looked like under the hood, thanks!

The display can be burned by sunlight because of the lens assembly, so it's probably quite a common repair

That's pretty crazy. I hate to say it, but even though Facebook/Meta is taking over the industry (Unfortunately), their acquisition of Oculus has improved the overall VR experience so far. My Quest 2 has taken some pretty serious accidental beatings, so serious respect for the Oculus design team!

1:08 - I thought you said 62 screws for a second and I got really worried for the repairability of the quest 2 for a sec XD

No way, man. If I try to disassemble my quest 2, I'll end up having to buy a new quest 2.

probably more than you think, they have extremely clear warnings about avoiding using the device outside or leaving it near a window because direct sunlight through the eye pieces gets magnified and can burn the screen

Holy cow, all of that crammed into such a small device that can run VR Fairly well is crazy.

Just think, about 6 years ago Oculus released basically their first headset.

pls show how to do that with the controllers. I would love to see the inside of those

Great breakdown, after 2100 hours in this headset (95% with PCVR) with no issues it is insane what they did. I use a battery pack and cable and get 13-14 hours out of it too.

I'm really glad that this is out now. Finding a tutorial to get to the battery was never really out there for the longest time. While I really like my quest 2 batteries are products that will go bad over time so knowing how to get to it when it eventually goes bad will be very helpful.

It's a small wonder in itself that it doesn't overheat constantly with how densely packed everything is, and how tiny that cooling system is. And yet, the only time I've ever heard of one of these overheating is if someone stuck a case on it that obstructed the air vents. (Basically that entire 1mm gap where the front plate meets the rest of the assembly.)
As much as I hate Zucc for his dystopian actions on the macro scale, I have nothing but mad respect for the engineers at Oculus who managed to make this little thing possible.

I was fully ready to watch a good 10-20 minute vid of you breaking it down, cause I didnt look at the time of the vid. But it ended so soon with such a easy understandable amount of knowledge amazing

It would be cool to see the screen powered on. I’d imagine the DPI being very high making the image look sharp

Most important - did the Quest 2 still work when reassembled? Great job on disassembly - love these videos.

Next, the controllers... The joystick ghosting has been really bugging me off

People take for granted these things we use so easily, but they never realize how hard and all the engineering and worl that goes into these pieces of technology. Im so glad Im someone who appreciates an understands the hard work thats done for us.
