Mikhail Burtsev - Artificial Intelligence Trends & Predictions

We’re joined by Dr. Mikhail Burtsev to discuss trends in Artificial Intelligence and applications in medicine, financial markets, personal digital assistants, Google LaMDA, Ray Kurzweil's Technological Singularity, and how open-source community software is helping drive this field forward for scientists and innovators across the globe.

Mikhail is the scientific director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (AIRI), and a head of Neural Networks and Deep Learning Laboratory at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). Mikhail is also founder and leader of open-source conversational AI framework DeepPavlov, and has a PhD in Computer Science from the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics and an MA in Microelectronics from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute.

Our discussion begins with a focus on artificial intelligence in medicine, including research applications in genetics and virology, including how AI can be used to identify protein binding sites and perform more accurate cancer screenings.

We'll also be talking about financial systems, and whether AI will be useful for tasks like FOREX or cryptocurrency trading, or maybe predicting the stock market. If so, does that create ethical issues with an unfair advantage for companies using it for profit?

In terms of natural language processing, Google LaMDA has recently been in the news when researcher Blake Lemoine posted transcripts of conversations which led him to believe the program had become sentient. We'll be discussing Mikhail's thoughts on this, and how it relates to his own work organizing a series of academic conversational AI challenges, including NIPS 2017, NeurIPS 2018, EMNLP 2020, NeurIPS 2021. Additionally, we'll be exploring the validity of the Turing test in today's world, and Ray Kurzweil's date of 2029 the date “for when an AI will pass a valid Turing test and therefore achieve human levels of intelligence”. Finally, we'll touch on Kurzweil's prediction of human-level AI by 2029, but also predicted a date for a Technological Singularity by 2045, where self-improving AI will lead to a new form of super intelligent sentient AI.
