The White House initially said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's memo to Attorney General Jeff Sessions prompted the President to fire James Comey, but Trump contradicted that account. CNN's Jeff Zeleny reports.

I doubt very much that Comey told Trump that he wasn't under investigation by the FBI. Comey would have had to say that he could neither confirm or deny that Trump was under investigation. It's also totally improper for a president to ask whether or not he is under investigation.
