Increase the diversity of microfauna in your freshwater aquarium with our Bag of Bugs! This is not your average microorganism culture, but rather a complete sample of our aquatic system. You will get a plethora of micro and macro organisms along with some of the natural materials that make up their habitat. This natural material includes fast growing plants, floating plants, leaf litter and seed pods. The creatures included in this bag of life are snails, scuds, seed shrimp, copapods, beneficial worms, rotifers, paramecium and the list goes on and on. The biodiversity in this breather bag will amaze you!

Why is it so vital for your aquarium to have lots of biodiversity in its microfauna population?
1st of all biodiversity means variety of life in a habitat or ecosystem. Microfauna means microscopic animals. Microfauna in your aquarium are all the little tiny creatures that make their home in the tanks substrate, plants and décor. Most of these creatures are too small to see with your naked eye but they play a vital role in the long term stability of the freshwater environment. These aquariums we keep can be much more than a glass box with water and fish. In fact, your fish will do infinitely better living in an environment that mimics Mother Nature. This will always include a large and diverse population of microorganisms. To put it simply, this diverse group of organisms, along with a natural habitat make up a food web that feeds itself and in turn creates a buffet of live food for your fish. Fish always are healthier when their diet is a varity of live natural foods. By using natural materials like dirt, sand, plants, wood, leaf litter, seed pods and other natural objects you can create a habitat that will support a large healthy population of microorganisms which in turn will support healthy fish.

I put a layer of my garden's soil in a ten gallon aquarium and topped it with a layer of play sand. I planted a couple water wisteria and threw some hornwort in too, with a couple big rocks. I tossed a couple seed gum pods from my neighbor's yard in and then I just sat back and watched for a month. The same thing happened. Aside from a few bucks for the aquatic plants, my little ecosystem was totally free. You don't need to buy a bag of bugs to create a little ecosystem in a jar. A scoop of dirt and some leaves from outside will give you all the starter kit you need. You can probably even find an old jar out there too. Have fun! It is a really cool hobby.

I love that you sell these. I am in the direction of natural, but am missing some of the key species for this sort of thing and am so happy I was able to purchse one of these to help out :)

This looks like an awesome product... a million times better than any "bacteria in a bottle" half-measure hacks. I have a 75 gallon tank that I set up with a bag of leaf litter and a starter culture from Father Fish. When payday comes again, I'm adding a Bag of Bugs to it. I love your content, keep it coming!!!

Man! I am so mad I JUST found your website!!! I have wasted SO much money buying my cultures from eBay 😫 I just bought a similar product that is smaller, not nearly as much in it and twice the price… YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!

I have ordered two of these bags (among other items) from PFW. Quick shipping and no issues on arrival. It has been fun to introduce them to my tanks as I convert over to more natural aquariums. I can't say many of the scuds survived long, but they are cool to watch. Hopefully a few hid in the substrate or heavy foliage areas to survive. Thanks PFW!

Oh this is awesome. I set up a planted tank in January and I think a bag of bugs would be a perfect addition.

Nice work. I've recently created my own microfauna tank from a old pickle jar and specimens collected from a local wetland. Took a few weeks of collecting, obeserving, and plucking out any little creatures I want to culture and leaving behind the stuff I don't want, like Hydra. Plan on using it in a new tank i'll be setting up soon. It been an interesting process, but I think next time I'll save myself the hassle and just order a bag-o-bugs. haha

I fell into aquariums hard and fast, and immediately after starting I fell in love with the idea of a more natural tank. The heavily scaped tanks look really cool, but the tanks that mimic a lake or pond have more appeal to me. I have around a dozen tanks that I keep, and the one that has given me the least trouble is my 20gallon at work that I put a bag of leafy bugs in almost a year ago now.

I'm starting to branch into the purposeful raising of fry, and I'm wondering if I could use a bag of bugs to set up a fry tank. I see conflicting information on the google machine on whether or not scuds will predate fry. Any thoughts?

What an excellent idea for a product! If only you shipped to Canada as well. It's so difficult to find something like this (or any live food/cultures, for that matter) where I am.

Cool! Had seed shrimp from live foods brought inside but haven't figured out how to sustain them. I do keep scuds and I have found many baby fish in these tanks when I put hornwort in them. I figured out what I thought was a dirty tank wasn't!
