My favorite writer. Seldom less than brilliant.

His fiction is even better than his nonfiction. And there is a troubling bit of submerged homophobia in the way his nonfiction is (rightly) appreciated and his fiction is (appallingly) ignored. The reviewer-ocracy is telling him to stay where he belongs--writing about show business--and turning up its nose at his subversive gay stories.
