As several protesters in Bangladesh accuse India of causing floods in the country’s eight districts, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement clarifying that India has nothing to do with the situation. At least eight districts in Bangladesh are experiencing severe flooding recently.

Amid the chaos, students of Jagannath University (JnU) blamed India for the floods and held a protest march on Wednesday. The student alleged that the floods were caused after India opened the sluice gates of the Dumboor and Gazaldoba dams without informing Dhaka.

India's decision to open the gates of the Dambur Dam without prior notification to Dhaka is a serious breach of responsibility, especially when sharing a common river with a neighboring country. When India decides to release water from the dam, it significantly impacts the downstream regions in Bangladesh, leading to sudden flooding and widespread damage.

As a country sharing a river with its neighbor, India has an obligation to ensure that Bangladesh is adequately prepared for such events. Accountability doesn't just stop at national borders—responsibility for the well-being of neighboring states is part of being a good regional partner. The Dambur Dam and the barrage are Indian assets, but that doesn't absolve India of the consequences of its actions on Bangladesh.

Claiming ignorance about the potential impact of suddenly opening the dam gates is unacceptable. The denial of responsibility in such situations only aggravates the problem. It’s crucial that India shares all relevant information with Bangladesh in a timely manner to prevent such disasters. This is not just about operational management; it's about regional cooperation and ensuring that the lives and livelihoods of people in neighboring countries are safeguarded.

In short, India must share the responsibility and be accountable for its actions. This includes providing advance notice and working collaboratively with Bangladesh to manage the shared water resources effectively.

What a hypocritical move of India "explaining" they are innocent and has nothing to do the sudden massive amount of water flowing from India. So innocent of India. Dramabaz🙄

I am from Nepal, and there are times when we need to open dams near the Bihar border. Whenever we do, the Indian media often blames Nepal and spreads negative news about us. However, opening the dam is actually to protect Bihar. It's not meant to intentionally flood the area; if we don't release the water, the high pressure could destroy the dam and lead to even worse destruction in Bihar. If the dam is destroyed it might take several years to make new dam. I believe India has taken similar actions in similar situations.

I am genuinely astonished at how lightly we are treating this grave situation. The consequences have been devastating, not just to our infrastructure but to the very livelihoods of everyday Bangladeshi citizens. This flood has crippled our entire nation, with effects so severe that they can hardly be overstated. What's more alarming is that this disaster wasn't entirely natural it was exacerbated by actions that weaponized what should have been a peaceful force of nature. The opening of dams by India has directly contributed to this catastrophe, turning a life-giving river into a tool of destruction. This is not just a matter of negligence; it’s a clear, undeniable fact that demands urgent attention and accountability.
