TITLE: Smoke, Ships, Dust, Salt, and Other Features Interacting With Clouds: Findings from Recent Field Campaigns

ABSTRACT

The first part of the seminar will be devoted to the possible existence of a relationship between the synoptic circulation and the local circulation in an alpine valley in winter, that of Grenoble in the western French Alps. We will show, based on data from meteorological stations, that this relationship exists only during anticyclonic blocking regimes. In a second part, we will discuss the impact of the variability within the anticyclonic blocking weather type on the local response (for temperature, wind and PM10 concentration) in the Grenoble valley. This work is part of the PhD work of Enzo Le Bouëdec.

-Post-doctoral researcher at the University of Washington (with James J. Riley)
-Assistant Professor in the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, in the physics Department
-Now Professor at University Grenoble Alpes

Working on mountain meteorology, with focus on the stable atmospheric boundary layer, for 20 years or so. Research now oriented toward pollutant transport, motivated by air quality issues (still not giving up process studies). Also working on the impact of climate change on the ABL in the Grenoble valley. Another, now less important, part of my research is dedicated to internal gravity waves in the deep ocean.
