Highside Crash Explained (Slow Motion)

Video of my crash at the TT Circuit of Assen. The rear wheel loses traction, skids, and then suddenly regains traction, creating a large torque which flips me head first off the bike and on the tarmac.

You were doing great before the crash, awesome riding ! I hope you still ride, dont let that accident bring you down !

Thanks for sharing budd. Depending on you tire/ surface condition, you had too much gas. Early slide detection is the key... Hold the throttle and pick the bike up by pulling on the inside handle bar. This will bring the bike into the slide....it sound like crazy thing to do, especially if dont have much road on the outside but its one of the few means to recover from the slide.

11 yrs old footage found me. You can hear the throttle open at 1:57 while still leaned over. That is the real reason the rear tire lost grip.

Thanks for posting this & good to hear you are ok. Viewing it in normal speed, my first thought was that you were on the throttle early, too early. Good to hear your analysis, mistakes can keep us alive if we learn from them.

I have experienced this too, broke my left bar, left footpeg, and all other left parts of the bike.

Why are so many saying to close the throttle when this happens, all the safety sources I read talk about always keeping throttle applied around a corner to maintain traction. Not hitting it hard, but not completely letting off of it, more like feathering it, just a little something.

Summary: bike loses traction in corner and suddenly gains it again and the bike tips over( highsiding) or the bike loses traction slides, and never gains the traction back (low siding) correct me if I’m wrong

If you had of gone to the outside more right after your early apex it might have been avoidable. I think you were trying to be nice to the guy you just passed by not cutting him off.

I did one of these last night on a cruiser. I took a corner too fast, tried to straighten out a bit and slow down. I obviously didn't' straight out enough and braked too much because I locked up the rear and fishtailed hard. high-siding me off the bike. we both slid a good 4 meters. I mostly landed on my hands and knees then belly slide to a stop. I had a helmet, jacket, gloves, boots and pants and they ALL got used. Be careful out there ride safe! Wear Gear!!

such a shame for that wind shield. it was sparkling clean. :)

@Slimmerik, is there anything you could have done to recover from the loss of traction or is the torque too great to overcome, once the rear wheel regains traction?

Sorry man. Must have hurt loads. I had a lowside crash three days ago and just figured out what made it happen. Panic / hard braking with the front lever. Accidents happen so fast leaving almost no time for us to react.

Pretty nice riding before the crash. Hope you were alright and the bike was salvageable.

poor Argentinian Kid, lack of experience brought him to such situation. But as far I can tell, there`s nothing you can do in such circunstances. RIP Lolo.

Where are you sitting in the seat? I highsided yesterday walked away okish but trying to figure out everything that I did wrong. Our crashes are near identical.

Any idea why you lost traction? Too aggressive on throttle? The other turns looked like you were pushing the envelope but pulled them off flawless.

Alright, this helped me out a bit. I started riding last year in January. I road the equivalent of 4 months on my DR650 including the Tail of the Dragon, Devil's Triangle, and the Skyway. No wrecks luckily. The engine exploded this past St. Patrick's Day and I just got my first street bike, an FZ10. Being that I've only ridden it a week, and my complete lack of experience on such a bike, what advice can you offer me to prevent high and low sides? I ride all year.
