Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday he had an “excellent conversation” with Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club after the president-elect’s threat to impose significant tariffs on two of America’s leading trade partners raised alarms in Ottawa and Mexico City. It was unclear, as Trudeau headed back to Canada from Florida, whether the conversation had alleviated Trump’s concerns.
Israel claims Hezbollah once again violated the terms of ceasefire agreement by smuggling weapons from Syria into Lebanon. This comes days after the truce went into effect. In the meantime, a Hamas delegation travels to Egypt on Saturday to resume peace talks with Israel. US President Joe Biden said the US would begin new efforts with Qatar, Egypt and Turkey to restart talks for a ceasefire and hostage release deal. Senator Lindsey Graham told Axios that President-elect Donald Trump wants to see a Gaza ceasefire before he returned to the White House on Jan. 20.
At least six Democrat members of Congress from Connecticut were targeted by bomb threats on their homes on Thanksgiving Day. Senator Chris Murphy and all five House of Representatives members were the subjects of the threats. Law enforcement said no explosives were located at any of their homes. One day earlier, the same threats and swatting attacks were received by several of President-elect Trump’s cabinet picks and appointees. Those were against New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Trump’s former Attorney General pick Matt Gaetz and former New York congressman Lee Zeldin.
