Rachel - man kann ein ganzes Gespräch mit nur einer Silbe bestreiten - es reicht aus das Wörtchen "ach" in allen passenden Betonungen zu nutzen und wenn man einen Gefühlsausbruch darstellen möchte wird man üppig und benutzt eine 2te Silbe: "Ach was", wahlweise als Ausruf oder Frage... 😉😂🤣😂

You forgot a couple of words. Perhaps the most used word when not needed is "mal". Guckt mal, Warte mal, Ich denke mal... mal - mal - mal. And when a German has a moment of hesitation... "Ja" is just thrown out in the middle of a sentence. "Gestern war ich... Ja, einkaufen."

I'll take the time to either learn the language or admit I don't know the language. I'm an American and I speak Spanish and am halfway through learning Russian grammar. I spoke some German as a child as well.

Mich hat mal ein indischer Guide gefragt, was "aber" bedeutet, weil er das in der Gruppe so häufig als Satzeinleitung gehört hatte- insbesondere, wenn man in einem Gespräch den Faden wieder aufnimmt. War mir gar nicht aufgefallen ;D

The best filler word in hindi is 'achha' which means 'ok' . Actually 'achha' means 'good' in hindi but it can be used as a filler word.

If you are in conversation with a German surely you speak german so just pay attention and engage with them, otherwise tell them you don't understand

Why try not to give the game away that you are not following what your interlocutor is saying? I would rather just interrupt them and tell them that I don't understand.
