I was expecting much much worse. He even allowed him to say goodbye to his family

“You raised a good boy.”
“Uh thank you?”
“No thank you, come on boy.”

Azrael got the short end of the stick. He was a hunter for a tribe on a frozen death world. The Dark Angels saw him murder someone during a turf war and went “yeah, this guy will do.”

Salamanders:
We don't do that here, and you can see your family next week during the holidays.

Meanwhile, Salamander Recruiter: "Now go give your father a hug and tell your mom you'll be back for dinner next week. And start trying to think of a nice souvenir to bring home as a gift for your siblings".

That's honestly not that bad. He asked an honest question, and the kid gave his answer and how he would feel. He passed, and the Dark Angel just told him "go tell your father you're going to become an astartes."

This is actually a perfect candidate. The kid showed trust in the space marine, but not blind trust. It showed that he could fundamentally understand orders, that he may not understand why, but he can understand that someone smarter who gave him that order does have a good reason. He explained why he felt that the question itself was just a test, but if it wasn't, why he would follow the order. Perfect space marine material. Hope the kid survived through the process. He would make a great commander

Thats… actually quite mild and even somewhat reasonable recruitment practice. He was even allowed to say goodbuy to his family - unimaginable rarity!

“Go outside and tell your father you shall be leaving us tonight… AND BRING ME HIS HEAD!!!”

Why are people upset or saying Lion El’Jonson would disapprove? The boy wasn’t actually ordered to do anything to his father. It was just a hypothetical question about his loyalty (due to Horus, The Fallen, and other traitors) and then a follow-up question as to his reasons why. The kid gave reasonable responses and passed. This part was surprisingly chill, especially for the Dark Angels.

Game recpects game. For a mere boy to not recoil in fear is impressive.

I’d rather jump into an active volcano than deal with an interrogator Chaplin.

That's not about loyalty but about being smart enough to come up with a good answer.

Either that kid is really smart or really... let's say convinced.
