My son and I made ours today and it was crazy easy! And inexpensive, as you mentioned. The only thing we did differently was hook it up to our downspout. I got that converter on Amazon as well as the kit and garbage pail. The whole thing cost about 50$ (the kit came with 2 sets) and maybe all of 45 minutes, mostly because of the downspout attachment. If we hadn't done that, 30 mins with me learning how to do it all! Thanks

great DIY project, i have a few older garbage bins that i use for harvesting rain water, but haven't added the spigots. This motivated me to do so! Thanks for sharing.

I live in a Caravan which has a 2nd paradise roof on it, which is angled slightly, I am thinking about doing something like this, this way I have fresh rainwater, to collect for drinking purposes, this has motivated me in doing something like this, I was thinking along these lines, but wasn't sure how to set it up, but I will be putting a little gutter system on the paradise roof, and putting a little down pipe on it to collect the rain water,
Also too I would be using the same principle for my trailer, which sits besides the van, and so items don't get wet, I would be doing the same thing there as well, so I would have 2 container's collecting the rainwater for drinking...and washing dishes.

Thank you for the video. I have a valley roof on one side of the house and with all the rain and snow in California I got out a large trash can but it filled up. I was able to siphon it out, thanks to videos on the rules of siphoning. The spigot came in today but can't find my 1 3/8" hole saw so out to the hardware store.

Drill a hole into the lid and fit it with a metal mesh drain cover, then flip the lid upside down to sit on top of the barrel. This will help keep debris out of your collected rain water. Place the barrel under your downspout for faster water collection.

Thinking* of using your idea but attaching a drip hose in order to water plants in a 20 ft. strip. I think I can get enough gravity push to do the job. I could even plug up some of the holes to keep the water flowing. In fact if I put the hole high enough I can aid the gravity. In addition, my downspout is presently directing water to the side of my house and is making a muddy mess. So if this works, two problems will be solved! Thanks for getting my thinking going.
